Pandora real quick, first 10. In a 70s mood.

01. samantha sang //emotions (1977)
Written by the Bee Gees, Barry's on this singing backup. Sang had a pretty decent hit with this one in 1977, right before the Brothers Gibb would explode onto the disco landscape and music history with Saturday Night Fever. I remembered this being on the radio so much that I was nearly sick to death of it even though I liked it.

Thumbed down two songs here that were 1980s and don't fit on this station

02. bread // baby i'm-a want you (1971)
Ah, Bread. The familiar, smooth vocals of David Gates. Who didn't hear these songs on the radio tons. This one doesn't have any particular memory or anything tied to it, I think I was like six when this was a huge hit. But to this day I do like Bread.

03. ace // how long (1974)
Lots have covered this, but I love the original by Ace, lead by Paul Carrack. Carrack would even pull this one out when he was a member of Squeeze. Just one of those songs of my childhood, on my trusty transistor all the time.

04. seals and crofts // summer breeze (1972)
I love the imagery this evokes as I listen. I feel the balmy summer evening. It's still appealing and holds up now. And it's got a toy piano!

Had to thumb down two more that were 1980s and don't belong here. And yeah, this station is more the mellow side of the 70s. We're in Easy Listening territory here. I have the 70s Rock Station for a little more kick.

05. billy joel // just the way you are (1977)
Off of The Stranger. Not my favorite, though, that would be Vienna or Scenes From an Italian Restaurant. But it's sweet, and I love the sax in here.

06. johnny rivers // swayin' to the music (slow dancing) (1977)
I never really paid much attention to this one when it was a hit. But later on I grew to love it. I still sing along with it when it comes on. Good one to turn down the lights to and slow dance, as the title implies. ;)

07. orleans // dance with me (1975)
Another one I didn't think much about when it was a hit. It just played a lot. I remember Donny and Marie Osmond covering it on their TV show. Haha! A little aside, that surprised me, I had no idea that John Hall, lead singer, was U.S. Representative for New York's 19th congressional district from 2007-2011.

Thumbed down some Journey. It was "Faithfully" and I love that one but it came out in 1983, so no not a fit for this station.

08. steely dan // do it again (1972)
I love Steely Dan's jazz infused rock. Listening to this in 1972 and being only 7 or 8, I just liked the sound and didn't think much about what it was about. It's about addiction of some type, perhaps sex and gambling or as strongly hinted at, drugs.

09. earth, wind and fire // after the love has gone (1979)
EW&F had a bunch of great ones. This one won Grammys for Record of the Year and R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. Written by David Foster, Jay Graydon and Bill Champlin, I love it. Donny Osmond covered it on Somewhere In Time and did an apt job.

10. al green // let's stay together (1971)
Oh, yeah. LOVE. Smooth, sexy, awesome. I have to listen to all of it every time it comes on. Again, Donny Osmond recorded this one for his Love Songs of the 70s album and did very well, I mean I love Donny, but Al, man. AL.

Off I go. Have a good Sunday everyone.

Doing another Pandora shuffle meme before I step out for a bit, just to kill a few minutes. Pandora 90s Radio has been chosen this time. First 10 to come up.

01. red hot chili peppers // scar tissue (1999)
With the birds I share this lonely view... I liked Californication because Frusciante was back, and this was a much welcome difference from One Hot Minute which I didn't care for much at all, really.

02. oasis // wonderwall (1995)
And after all, you're my wonderwall... This album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? got me into a huge Oasis thing when it came out. It's one of my favorite Oasis songs.

03. matchbox 20 // push (1997)
I also went through a little matchbox 20 thing. Rob Thomas denies that this song was intended to be misogynistic. It's not one of my favorite matchbox songs, but I remember hearing this on the radio a bit.

Note: I cheated and skipped a couple of times here since it ended up being another RHCP song, this one "Under The Bridge"... which I like, but is quite sad, really. Plus, I just did RHCP here. Then the next song was "Island In The Sun" by Weezer but that was 2001, wasn't it? So thumbed that one down, not for a 90s station. Skipped a third, this one Fall Out Boy's "Sugar, We're Goin' Down" which was 2005 or so? No, 90s Radio, Pandora, please. Thumbed it down. LOL

04. sugar ray // someday (1999)
Okay finally. This one works. LOL! No real memory or significance attached to this one. I like it though. It's from 14:59 which is a play on Andy Warhol's prediction that everyone will be famous for 15 minutes. I guess Sugar Ray's fifteen came and went. There's another song off this album I liked though, Every Morning. I'll still sing along to some Sugar Ray, I don't care.

I'm beginning to wonder if this general 90s station will play me any grunge. It won't... I might switch to that station in a minute. ;)

Oh. Uncle Kracker's "Follow Me". Not 90s... *thumbs down* Damn. Out of skips for a bit.

Oh. What do you know... Sugar Ray's "Every Morning"! LOL!

05. semisonic // closing time (1995)
Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end... One of the band's most popular and enduring songs. I still hear it pop up in things from time to time. It was one of our "bar songs" at the time, when the night was coming to a close, someone would always put this song on.

06. smashmouth // all star (1999)
Playing me enough from the end of the decade, I see, Pandora. Anyway, this one only reminds of Shrek any more. And it's been in so much other stuff. LOL! I prefer Walking on the Sun truth be told.

07. smashing pumpkins // tonight, tonight (1996)
I just quick switched over to the grunge / alt 90s station. I know, I cheated a bunch on this one. Oh well. I love Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and think it's a quite brilliant album. This song is one of my favorites on there. I've heard it used in a few commercials, since, I believe.

08. soundgarden // black hole sun (1994)
Ah... much better station. All I can think of when hearing this any more is that freaky music video the band made for it. But it's awesome, so is the Superunknown album.
Guitarist Kim Thayil calls this song the "Dream On" of their live sets.

09. third eye blind // semi charmed life (1997)
I want something else to get me through this semi-charmed kind of life baby, baby... A catchy little ditty about crystal meth addiction. This one became part of my late 90s musical landscape.

10. nirvana // dumb (1993)
I think I'm dumb or maybe just happy... Finally I get some Nirvana. LOL! I listened to them a lot back then. Still do.
hippie_chick: (earphones / nietzsche quote)
This time, though, I'm going to take a cue from another friend and write a couple of personal lines about the song instead of lyric clips. I'm in an 80s mood, I guess. For the first four years of the decade (Freshman year started late 1979, graduated 1983) I was in high school so most likely you'll see those memories associated. Let's go-

Pandora: on.

01. the go-go's // our lips are sealed (1981)
Sophomore year. Just one of those radio songs that blended in with everything else in the halls and hanging out with friends. Remember seeing the Go-Go's videos and thinking those chicks were so cool.

02. 99 red balloons // nena (1984)
No real associations here, but I will say I liked the German "99 Luftballons (Neunundneunzig Luftballons)" better, and yes, I can sing it in the German.

03. men without hats // the safety dance (1983)
This song is from early in my senior year. Memories of the video on MTV more than anything. Another of those radio songs that were just part of the background at the time.

04. eddie money // take me home tonight (1986)
No real associations with this one other than hearing it on the radio tons. I remember liking Ronnie Spector popping in there... his "just like Ronnie said..." then her "be my little baby..."

05. starship // nothing's gonna stop us now (1987)
This is what Jefferson Airplane / Jefferson Starship turned into in the 80s... a pop group churning out stuff like this and "We Built This City". This one reminds me of the movie Mannequin mostly.

06. martika // toy soldiers (1989)
Martika wrote this one about a friend who was wrapped up in cocaine addiction. She has some of her former Kids Incorporated castmates singing choruses with her, including Stacy (Fergie) Ferguson. Jennifer Love Hewitt (later KI member) is also in the choruses. This one doesn't really have any associations with me, one of those radio things once again and would play often, as I was working in a little gift shop that I loved called The Paper Tree. This was also a favorite year in the decade for music in my mind though I do remember.

07. the go-go's // head over heels (1984)
More Go-Go's. They were heavily entwined in 80s music for me. I listened to the radio a great deal back then, and remember this one just being one of those bops that I'd sing along with when it would come on. I think this ended up on one of my cassette tapes I'd do off the radio of songs I liked. I might still have a couple of those hanging around here as a matter of fact.

08. a-ha // take on me (1985)
This was the year we moved from Indiana to Florida. My family remains here today. This song was everywhere. It was a favorite, and I most strongly remember that video! Singing along with the radio "I'll beeee gone in a day or twooooooo!".

09. kim wilde // you keep me hangin' on (1986)
Yet another cover of the Diana Ross and the Supremes hit. My fave cover belongs to Vanilla Fudge, but this one was good, remember it playing a lot.

10. irene cara // flashdance... what a feeling (1983)
OMG this song and this movie. My senior year. I was obsessed with this soundtrack. OBSESSED I TELL YOU. It started off with me buying it on cassette, and today resides in my digital music collection. A little aside: I was supposed to see Irene Cara as Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar back a few years ago now, and she ended up sick and not performing. Also I may or may not have ripped up a couple of sweatshirts because of this film.

EDIT! LOL now it starts playing some really cool stuff. I've been singing along like crazy over here. Ah well... I'll do this one again soon.

Put your music on shuffle, then answer with the first line of the songs.

And on the third day, God said:
Is this the end of the beginning or the beginning of the end?
Black Sabbath - End of the Beginning

You say tomato, but I say:
Do you believe in magic in a young girl's heart?
The Lovin' Spoonful - Do You Believe In Magic?

My life would be better if:
Disempowered, the scattering flock dances in a fever at the castle rock.
CAKE - Meanwhile, Rick James

I’d like to stand atop a mountain and exclaim:
My baby's got a heart of stone.
The White Stripes - Truth Doesn't Make A Noise

My strongest belief is that:
You are sailing softly through the sun, in the broken stone age dawn you fly so high.
ELO - Strange Magic

When insulted, I’m likely to shoot back with:
Living by the law is a bloody necessary bore!
Def Leppard - Run Riot

When I grow older, I’d like to:
Lives open and trashed - 'look ma, watch me crash!'
Pearl Jam - Last Exit

If you asked me what I did last night, I’d say:
I just don't know what to do with myself.
Elvis Costello - I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself

If you asked me what I did an hour ago, I’d say:
She came down from Cincinatti, it took her three days on the train.
Jimmy Buffett - Fins

I want to take my best friend aside and say to them:
Everybody's talkin' at me, I don't hear a word they're sayin'.
Harry Nilsson - Everybody's Talkin'

My best friend is currently going through this:
Curtain opens, spotlights the gentleman signing his love letter 'Best Wishes, Simpleton'.
Jellyfish - New Mistake

My family is currently going through this:
Just a song before I go, to whom it may concern: traveling twice the speed of sound it's easy to get burned.
CSN - Just A Song Before I Go

On one of my really good days, I look like this:
Everything, everything, everything, everything in its right place
Radiohead - Everything In Its Right Place

If I could remind people of just one thing, I would remind them:
The way you wear your hat, the way you sip your tea - the memory of all that, no, they can't take that away from me.
Frank Sinatra - They Can't Take That Away From Me

After a night of decadence, when I get home, I say to myself:
Maybe, oh, if I could pray and I try, dear, you might come back home, home to me.
Janis Joplin - Maybe

One of my more bizarre encounters centered around the phrase:
Well you went uptown riding in your limousine with your fine Park Avenue clothes.
Billy Joel - Big Shot

This is my most commonly used pick-up line:
I could escape this feeling with my china girl, I feel a wreck without my little china girl.
David Bowie - China Girl

I would be wooed if someone came up to me and said:
Watch the sun as it crawls across a final time, and it feels like, like it was a friend.
NIN - In This Twilight

Top Five on Friday @ The Music Memoirs

Top 5 songs you think it should be illegal for anyone to cover.

1. Rebel, Rebel by David Bowie.
I love it but its had a full life. Even Bowie retired it. Please do the same.

2. Hurt by Nine Inch Nails.
Johnny Cash so took ownership of the song when HE covered it any other attempts would just be complete fail.

3. Without You by Harry Nilsson.
Needs to be left alone now. Harry's is the only version I think got just the right feeling and depth anyway.

4. Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell.
Ever since the Counting Crows/Vanessa Carlton version I've been all "leave it alone now" about this song.

5. Yesterday by The Beatles.
THE most covered song. Ever. Time to leave it alone now I think. Really.

That aside, I really don't mind covers because a great song is a great song. But sometimes, just sometimes it's a bit overdone.
And by the way? I give William Shatner free reign to cover any damn thing he wants. "Rocket Man" anyone? OMG LOL! ♥

hippie_chick: (earphones / nietzsche quote)
Top Five on Friday @ The Music Memoirs

Top 5 one hit wonders.

I had a hard time picking because there are a few. But I think I narrowed it down. I tried to mix it up a bit and not stick to one era. Not in any particular order:

1. ? and the Mysterians - 96 Tears. (Video)
This song is ingrained in me. So much a part of my growing up. I love it.

2. Love And Rockets - So Alive. (Video)
So hot. I still love this one.

3. Free - All Right Now. (Video)
Still a classic rock favorite.

4. Nena - 99 Luftballoons. (Video)
It's gotta be the German version.

5. M - Pop Muzik. (Video)
So many argue that this is an 80s song... it technically became a hit in 1979 just barely making it '70s. I VIVIDLY remember the video.

Tuesday Tunes @ The Music Memoirs

A few fun questions for you:

What is the oldest album in your collection? (oldest as in you've had it longer than the others)
Hmmmm... probably my copy of "Revolver". I've had it since I was six years old. :)

What albums have you bought recently?
I downloaded one by Neko Case on Amazon because I fell in love with one song and wanted to hear more.

Where do you buy the most downloads?
Amazon. Only because of the stupid DRM coding on the downloads from iTunes. Plus I prefer mp3 not m4a. Still have quite a few from iTunes, but more from Amazon.

If you were to get a gift card from one music store, which one would it be and why?
I would love it to be from Amazon. I just prefer the ease and selection.

What do you have more of; physical albums for downloads?
Oh about equal right now I'd say.

Happy Halloween my music lovin' people! What is the creepiest music video you've ever watched?

I'm cheating, as usual. I'll give you five that I find pretty creepy.

Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun

Aphex Twin - Come To Daddy
Well pretty much any Aphex Twin. OMG messed UP.

Tool - Prison Sex

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Y Control

Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)

And as a bonus I dare you to look up Nine Inch Nails' "Happiness In Slavery". I dare you.
But be warned. COMPLETELY OFF PUTTING AND ALSO NSFW !! It's totally messed up.

What are some of the music videos that give YOU the heebie jeebies?

Top Five on Friday @ The Music Memoirs

Top 5 songs you like to sing along to.

1. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
I do every single time, can't help it. "I see a little silhouetto of a man. Scaramouche, scaramouche, can you do the fandango?
Thunderbolt and lightning very very frightening me. GALILEO! GALILEO!..."

2. Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - I Love Rock and Roll
It's my tried and true karaoke jam. I love singing this one.

3. Aerosmith - Crazy
There are a few Aerosmith numbers I love to sing along to but this one drags it out of me every time.

4. Steve Miller Band - The Joker
I pretty much have this song aced on Guitar Hero now, and it's fun to sing and play at the same time.

5. The Beatles - Can't Buy Me Love
Again, there are many I sing along to by The Beatles but this one is just too much fun not to!

Top 5 Rock Couples (In this case where both parts of a couple are in the music industry)

Oh that little caveat makes this a bit trickier! Not in any necessary order:

1. Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa.

They seem pretty solid and still a great couple after this many years.

2. Paul and Linda McCartney.

Can't not include them. Theirs was a great love story.

3. Johnny Cash and June Carter.

Their story is rockier than the mountains but their love was just as strong.
When she died, Johnny didn't last much more to this Earth without her.

4. Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani.

I just have always liked them together.
Gwen of course is the lead singer of No Doubt and Gavin fronts the band Bush.

5. Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne.

Sharon is and has been Ozzy's manager for years.
I honestly believe Sharon completes Ozzy... he adores her, and she him.
