Steal Like an Artist

I’ve been struggling a lot to keep writing, to keep creating, to find the inspiration and the focus I need to do my job. A lot of it is related to my Depression, but there comes a point when the difference between being a professional and a hobbyist is actually doing the work, even — especially — when it’s hard.

So this weekend, Anne and I took the kids up to Santa Barbara to celebrate our birthdays (which are all in the next two weeks), and to get a change of scenery for a couple of days. It was a gorgeous trip, emotionally and spiritually, and while it didn’t give me the magic bullet to suddenly break through the struggle I’ve been having, I made a ton of progress, because I read a book that I took with me. Here’s my review that I posted to my Goodreads thingy:

Steal Like an Artist, by Austin Kleon, is essential reading for all artists.

It’s a quick read that you can finish in one sitting, but the ideas and advice it contains will stay with you long after you’ve put it down. Some of Austin’s suggestions will validate what you’re already doing, some will challenge you to fundamentally change a creative practice, others will inspire you to grab a notebook and get to work immediately.

Because it’s such a small and accessible book, you’ll want to go back to it from time to time. Just like Stephen King’s On Writing, as you change and grow as an artist, it reveals new ideas and inspirations to you that you may have missed on a previous read.

This is a fantastic addition to your library, and a wonderful gift for any creative person in your life.

I’ve been profoundly inspired by Austin’s book, because he reaffirmed things I’ve already been doing as an artist, but mostly because he gave me permission to think about the entire creative process differently.

For a long time, I have felt like a travel writer who never leaves the house, and Steal Like An Artist helped me find the door so I can get back on the road.

Thor: Ragnarok     HD720p 94MB   HD1080p 171MB
Comic-Con trailer for this psychedelic, Australian-Kiwi action comedy. This time Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok - the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization - the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela (Cate Blanchett). But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger - the Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo)! Many of the cast members return, additions are Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Karl Urban as Skurge and Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster. Directed by Taika Waititi (Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Boy, What We Do in the Shadows).
Pleased to spot that Waititi cast Rachel House from his previous movie.

Justice League     HD720p 161MB   HD1080p 294MB
Four minute Comic-Con trailer for DC Comics' desperate attempt to catch-up with Marvel's Avengers, directed by Zack Snyder (Man of Steel, 300, Sucker Punch). Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince (Gal Gadot), to face an even greater enemy. Together, the two work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes - Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) - it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
J.K. Simmons, Amy Adams, Connie Nielsen, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Amber Heard, Joe Morton, Billy Crudup, Ciarán Hinds, Kiersey Clemons, Willem Dafoe, Jesse Eisenberg and Henry Cavill are listed as cast member, if the running time permits.

Wonderstruck     HD720p 16MB
First (almost) music-only trailer for the latest movie directed by Todd Haynes (Far from Heaven, Carol, Velvet Goldmine), based on the novel from Brian Selznick (Hugo). Ben and Rose are children from two different eras who secretly wish their lives were different. Ben longs for the father he has never known, while Rose dreams of a mysterious actress (Julianne Moore) whose life she chronicles in a scrapbook. When Ben discovers a puzzling clue in his home and Rose reads an enticing headline in the newspaper, both children set out on quests to find what they are missing that unfold with mesmerizing symmetry. Michelle Williams has a small role.
Was not as well received at Cannes as Haynes' previous movies.

Proud Mary     HD720p 75MB
Action movie about a hit woman (Taraji P. Henson) working for an organized crime family in Boston, whose life is completely turned around when she meets a young boy whose path she crosses when a professional hit goes bad. Billy Brown, Danny Glover, Neal McDonough and Xander Berkeley are also part of the cast. Directed by Babak Najafi (London Has Fallen, Easy Money II).
It's starting to get crowded in the cool hitman genre.

Goon: Last of the Enforcer     HD720p 79MB
Trailer from Canada for the sequel. It's a new day for the Halifax Highlanders. A pro lockout has reunited old teammates and brought a crew of new players to the bench; notably missing from the line-up, however, is everyone’s favourite enforcer and heart of the team, Doug “The Thug” Glatt (Sean William Scott). Sidelined after one too many hits and now married with a baby on the way, he's hanging up his skates and settling into life as an insurance salesman. But when his nemesis Anders Cain (Wyatt Russell) is made captain of the Highlanders and new ownership threatens to tear his team apart, Doug is compelled back into action. Jay Baruchel, Elisha Cuthbert, Alison Pill, Marc-André Grondin, Kim Coates, Callum Keith Rennie, T.J. Miller and Liev Schreiber are also part of the cast. Baruchel also directs.
Reviews from Canada aren't too kind. It's apparently also even more brutal than the first one.

WHITE PRIVILEGE in all upper case

Frankly, even other white people would be sick of this woman's shit if she were in say .. my neighborhood.

White woman named Mackenzie buys an apartment in Harlem and starts launching a campaign against: the ice cream truck.

Yes, the offending ice cream truck driver has the nerve, the unmitigated gall, to blast jingles from his parked truck between 7:45-9:00 PM, according to Mackenzie. Playing jingles while parked is technically illegal, as Mackenzie knows, but it’s also the kind of thing literally nobody but Mackenzie gives a shit about. She found this out the hard way because she called everyone from 311 to the cops to the fucking mayor and her “problem” still wasn’t solved.

Because no one gives a shit.

The first time this happened, she recalls, “I went down and said to him, ‘Would you mind turning off the music?’ He looked at me and he was like, ‘What are you talking about?’”

She continued, “I said, ‘It’s illegal for you to have your music on anyway, so could you please turn it off?”

His response: “Fuck off.”

Update, 7-24-17: in working with images on my other blog tonight I discovered Photobucket has write-protected ransomed images so that even if the method described below works for you, you can only view ransomed images in your browser. Once you download them, they're not viewable on your computer. They also cannot be viewed if you upload them elsewhere. As I say in the post following this ETA, download your albums. Images in downloaded albums were not write-protected - at least not "as of a few weeks ago" when I grabbed my albums.

As I said to Andrew Ducker, it's slow and awful, but until Photobucket disables the ability to use this trick, if you have a copy of Firefox to travel to the image(s) in question, it works even if you're not logged into Photobucket, but does not work on images with the word "album" in the URL, only on images with the word "gallery" in their web addresses.

Which I learned only after my profile meme got ransomed sometime this week, which I caught on to just minutes before posting this. Photobucket images on my blog might be gone now, too, but I don't have time to check.

For Photobucket URLs with the word "gallery" in them, only...

  1. Right-click the ransom badge in your post (for expediency's sake, I'm linking to Andrew's images for testing, so you can try the steps out yourself, as I had no ransom badges of my own when I began this)
  2. Right-click the ransom badge on the Photobucket page you're brought to
  3. The original image has now become visible
  4. Right-click the image and click "Save as" to download (see ETAs at top of post and below for more info) Screencap away - lotsa gotchas, though, if you go this route
  5. Once you follow the above steps, hit your browser's back button. The original picture (not the ransom badge) will show up on its Photobucket page and the post it was added to.

These steps have only worked for me so far in Firefox latest (version 54.0.1) so they might not work in other or older browsers. They do work in both Firefox's regular and private browsing modes. Using Opera with adblock results in a shocking Photobucket directive to install an anti-Adblock script called BlockAdblock, aka FuckAdblock, and links you to a site that I won't share because Web of Trust gives it such a low rating. "Photobucket teams with FuckAdblock" needs to be my next post title, as that's kind of news in itself.

ETA, 7-26-17: Using Chromium (like the barebones version of Google Chrome, which I had to use tonight to deal with Wordpress's PHP-from-hell backend burning up Firefox) the above steps not only won't work, but clicking "Save As" will result in downloading Photobucket's actual ransom badge.

As for other ways to access Photobucket images, Fix Photobucket and the photobucket embed fix app are both dead. You can spam me in the comment section with any apps, tools or websites that actually still work, but I'm quite picky and will try to check a tool before I publish any comment on it. Comments initially will stay screened.

ETA, 7-26-17: [personal profile] killerweasel has found a script via Twitter which, if you own a Wordpress-based site, replaces the images for you. From their web page: "PhotobucketScraper is a script to download all images to your server in the original folder structure." For website owners, this or a similar plugin might be the best way to go.

Downloading Photobucket Albums

Edited on 7-24-17 to add: download your albums. See instructions at next link. See Update at top for more info.

I've had no problem downloading Photobucket libraries, but there are reports that a few people have been unable to. If you don't block ads that could be one reason why; the page basically never finishes loading and will load one ad after another (up to a dozen) which locks your browser up and slows everything down while you're trying to access images, download libraries, or even copy and share file links.

Some people claim Photobucket's mobile site is much faster. There's also a Photobucket app that's said to load up even quicker than Photobucket does on the Web.

As for moving Photobucket albums to a new image host, you might want to skip moving them to imgur. Imgur's ToS prohibits creating libraries that have already been linked to from other websites and will resize images on direct link, making them basically useless.

You might not want to bother with TinyPic, either, because it's already owned by Photobucket.

So I can tell you what others have suggested and what I'm doing: others mainly suggest getting your own domain name and a hosting plan to host images yourself. From what I gather, self-hosted image libraries (not some roll-your-own solution like adding them to posts, or buying a Wordpress-hosted plan) involve buying or at least adding a separate tool or utility to the backend of your website.

Other ideas include using a free Blogger account, then creating individual posts (Blogger allows up to 10 images per post). Kind of awkward...then there's free Wordpress, which along with Dreamwidth's hosting, is what I use for some of my images. Free Wordpress has 3GB of free storage space, and individual posts are automatically created for each image. These posts aren't displayed publicly nor are they indexed by search engines, and you don't need to know their addresses since you can find all your uploaded images in the Media Library.

I just...*headdesks with laughter*

My phone's cheapest prepaid plan is $45 through GoPhone, aka AT&T PREPAID (allcaps are theirs, not mine). I don't, to say the least, have $45 for anything, much less my stupid phone, but we're getting into storm season, I still fear the trees and I happened to drop my LG flip phone - which I kind of fucking adored in all its 2G glory - in the toilet the other day and the 3G replacement is such a dud I plan to throw it off the next bridge I come across.

Besides my Windows phone and my bridge-bound dud, I have a tiny Android I haven't used in literally years, so I called Net10, who services it, to ask about plans. Their cheapest is $35, saving me $10 bucks, so I took it (data went from 6GB high speed with rollover to 2GB without rollover; other than that the plans are about the same) only to realize I had to migrate my Windows phone data to Android - mostly contacts, photos and emails (I could be upset about losing call logs and texts but I'm really not, so I haven't sought to restore either one of those).

As I write this Google Drive, aka Backup and Sync (the name change is theirs, not mine, sans the allcaps) is syncing 9,655 files between my laptop and their servers. I decided my folder selection was too aggressive when GUID diagrams for Firefox and my Dell printer began rolling in but whatever. To get this far I had to uninstall Google Drive after merely "upgrading" it to Backup and Sync, which failed miserably, not allowing me to sync the proper folders and basically fubaring everything.

While I was unfubaring the laptop installation, I rolled back Drive on Android to factory-installed settings and broke the sync connection from my laptop, which wiped out all the files on Android's Drive. There weren't many because the Gmail address I use for Android was not talking to the one I use on my laptop so I logged out of GMail on my laptop, logged back in using my Android Gmail address, then re-installed Drive (now Backup and Sync) on my laptop. This installation went flawlessly and is syncing away as I write this - and slowing my connection to Dreamwidth to a crawl.

When it's finished, I should be able to upgrade Drive to Backup and Sync on Android and pull in files from my laptop, which should bring over my Windows phone data, because I threw my OneDrive folder in there and it actually let me, which I cannot believe. Getting that done should pull in all the photos on my Windows phone, which are the only data still missing after the work I did last night to pull in everything else...

First I imported my main Outlook account to GMail, but the import was marked "has not started" with a "provide info" link that made me log in again in a small, separate window that barred add-ons like LastPass from running, then told me my credentials were incorrect although after triple-checking them against LastPass I could see everything was correct.

So I googled these problems and import will probably never finish based on others getting the same error messages since literally 2009, so I moved down the list to Send Mail As and Check mail from other accounts. Those tasks went as expected, so now my Outlook mail is forwarding to GMail on Android, so I'll never really need to check my Windows phone again. I also have a setting that shows what's coming in off Outlook - but according to the unlabelled emails I'm getting at the moment, it's at least partly malfunctioning, so I'll need to fiddle with that some more.

Once that was done, my Windows contacts synced with Android and GMail started receiving Outlook mail, so things were getting better, but I don't like stock Android, so I was in need of a more ideal solution when I stumbled across Arrow Launcher, which uses "pages" in place of launch icons or home screen widgets to let you see email as it arrives (you can use app icons or pages, but pages are amazing) so I set up an Outlook page as my second home screen (just swipe right) and now I don't even need an app to scan my email (though I still need an app to read the body text).

Unlike any Windows app ever, it doesn't crash (well, it crashed immediately after installing - um, it not only crashed, it removed all my custom settings, but after a phone restart and a redo of all the settings, it seems to work just fine).

To get around Android's ugly stock app I'm using Android Messages; I tried Allo but it's too resource-intensive, so I had to remove it after only a few minutes. That I can't update from Jellybean to the current version is irritating because I want the Ibotta app, which so far is the only app that isn't compatible, but I haven't really "done" apps in my rush to get Windows data onto Android, so I guess I'll see what else fails to play well with it eventually.

The Shape Of Water     HD720p 97MB   HD1080p 174MB
An other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963, directed by Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, Hellboy). In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Her life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. Doug Jones, Michael Shannon, Michael Stuhlbarg and Richard Jenkins are also part of the cast.

The Snowman     HD720p 93MB
Tense thriller directed by Tomas Alfredson (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Let the Right One In), based on a novel by Jo Nesbø. When an elite crime squad's lead detective (Michael Fassbender) investigates the disappearance of a victim on the first snow of winter, he fears an elusive serial killer may be active again. With the help of a brilliant recruit (Rebecca Ferguson), the cop must connect decades-old cold cases to the brutal new one if he hopes to outwit this unthinkable evil before the next snowfall. Charlotte Gainsbourg, Val Kilmer, Sofia Helin, David Dencik and J.K. Simmons are also part of the cast.
Tense is fine, I only often wish such movies were less gruesome.

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women     HD720p 84MB
Biographical drama described as a a superhero origin tale unlike any other. It tells the story of what inspired Harvard psychologist Dr. William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans) to create the iconic Wonder Woman character in the 1940's. While Marston's feminist superhero was criticized by censors for her 'sexual perversity', he was keeping a secret that could have destroyed him.His muses for the Wonder Woman character were his wife Elizabeth Marston (Rebecca Hall) and their lover Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote), two empowered women who defied convention: working with Marston on human behavior research - while building a hidden life with him that rivaled the greatest of superhero disguises. Connie Britton is also part of the cast. Written and directed by Angela Robinson (D.E.B.S.).
First thought this is a cheap attempt to piggy-back on the Wonder Woman movie. But this is an interesting story.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle     HD720p 69MB   HD1080p 129MB
Full trailer for the sequel, again directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, Layer Cake). This time our heroes face a new challenge. When their headquarters are destroyed and the world is held hostage, their journey leads them to the discovery of an allied spy organization in the US called Statesman, dating back to the day they were both founded. In a new adventure that tests their agents' strength and wits to the limit, these two elite secret organizations band together to defeat a ruthless common enemy, in order to save the world, something that's becoming a bit of a habit for Eggsy (Taron Egerton). Colin Firth, Mark Strong and Sophie Cookson also return. Cast additions are Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges, Pedro Pascal and Sir Elton John.

Only The Brave     HD720p 90MB
Drama based on the elite crew of firemen (Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Jeff Bridges, James Badge Dale, Taylor Kitsch) called the Granite Mountain Hotshots from Prescott, Arizona who battled a wildfire in Arizona in June 2013 that claimed the lives of 19 of their members. As most of us run from danger, they run toward it. Jennifer Connelly and Andie MacDowell are also part of the cast. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, TRON: Legacy).

making space to be creative

One week and about ten hours ago, I decided to step away from Twitter for a little bit. The specific details aren’t important, and I suspect that many of you reading this now are already nodding in agreement because you grok why. But I took it off my phone, and I haven’t been to the website on my desktop since. For the first 48 hours, I spent a lot of time wondering if I was making a choice that mattered, and thinking about how I wasn’t habitually looking at Twitter every few minutes to see if I’d missed anything funny, or to see the latest bullshit spewing forth from President Fuckface’s mouthanus. I was, ironically, spending more time thinking about Twitter since I wasn’t using it than I spent thinking about it when I was.

It started out as a 24 hour break, then it was a 48 hour break, then it was the weekend, and here we are one week later and I don’t feel like I’m missing anything important. I feel like I’ve given myself more time to be quiet and alone, more time to reflect on things, and I’ve created space in my life to let my mind wander and get creative.

I’m not creating as much as I want to, and I’m starting to feel like maybe I’ll never be able to create as much as I want to, but I’ve gotten some stuff done this week that probably wouldn’t have gotten done if Twitter had been filling up the space that I needed.

Here’s a little bit from my blog post that became a short story that grew into a novella that is now a novel, All We Ever Wanted Was Everything:

My mother was leaning against her car, talking with one of the other moms, when we arrived. My sister was throwing a Strawberry Shortcake doll into the air and catching it while they watched. I walked out of the bus and across the blazing hot blacktop to meet her.

Willow, catch!” My sister cried, sending Strawberry Shortcake in a low arc toward me. I caught her without enthusiasm and handed her back. “You’re supposed to throw her to me!” Amanda said, demonstrating. Her doll floated in a lazy circle, arms and legs pinwheeling, before falling back down into my sister’s waiting arms. The writer in me wants to make a clever reference to how I was feeling at that moment, about how I could relate to Strawberry Fucking Shortcake, spinning out of control in the air above us, but it feels hacky, so I’ll just talk about how I wanted to make the reference without actually making the reference, thereby giving myself permission to do a hacky writer’s trick without actually doing it. See, there’s nothing tricky about writing, it’s just a little trick!

It’s still in the first draft, and I may not keep all or even any of it, but after putting it aside for months while I was depressed about too many things to look at it, it feels so good to be back into this story.

Oh, speaking of writing, I got notes back from the editors on my Star Wars 40th anthology submission. I thought that, for sure, they’d want me to rework a ton of it, but all they asked me to do is change a name! And they told me it was beautiful! So I’ve been feeling like a Capital-W Writer for a few days.

And speaking of feeling happy for a change, Hasbro and Machinima announced that I’m a voice in the next installment of the Transformers animated series, Titans Return. And it feels silly to care about this particular thing, but Daily Variety put my name in the headline, which made me feel really, really good.I’ve always felt like the only thing that should matter is the work, and that the work should be able to stand on its own … but that’s not the reality even a little bit. Daily Variety is the industry’s paper of record, so when it chooses to put you in the headline of a story, people pay attention and it matters in the way that can make the difference between getting called for a meeting, or the last ten years of my life as an actor.

It’s also a good reminder that, even if I’m not getting the opportunities I want to be an on-camera actor, it is entirely within my power to create the space I need to be a writer.

A Wrinkle In Time     HD720p 69MB   HD1080p 127MB
First trailer for this epic adventure based on Madeleine L’Engle's classic which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and ultimately, the triumph of love. After the disappearance of her scientist father (Chris Pine), three peculiar beings (Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling) send Meg, her brother, and her friend to space in order to find him. Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Peña, André Holland and Zach Galifianakis are also part of the cast. Directed by Ava DuVernay (Selma, The 13th, Middle of Nowhere). To be in theatres next spring.
I suspect you have to be familiar with the book to be able to appreciate the trailer.

Blade Runner 2049     HD720p 89MB   HD1080p 166MB
Second full trailer for the sequel that takes places thirty years after the events of the first film. A new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. K's discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years. Very diverse cast includes Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, Barkhad Abdi, Hiam Abbass, Dave Bautista and Jared Leto. Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario, Incendies).
The visuals are still tempting. But, I hesitate to mention it, I have problems with Gosling and Leto here.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi     HD720p 117MB   HD1080p 197MB
Three minute behind the scenes featurette for the eighth episode, written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick, Brothers Bloom), to be in theatres at Christmas. There isn't much yet in terms of official summary other than Rey continues her epic journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker. Many actors from the last few decades return, new additions are Laura Dern, Benicio Del Toro and Kelly Marie Tran. Last time it was Daniel Craig, this time imdb lists Tom Hardy as a possible stormtrooper.
As much as I enjoy seeing the footage, the actors and the characters, the promotional lines they are forces to say are so off-putting. Wish there was a version without that.

Women Who Kill     HD720p 73MB
Dry comedic drama in which commitment phobic Morgan and her ex-girlfriend Jean, hosts of a female serial killer-centric podcast, still show all the signs of being a couple. But everything changes when Morgan falls hard and fast for the mysterious Simone (Sheila Vand), who may or may not be a killer.
Looks entertaining.

The Layover     HD720p 93MB
Lowbrow comedy about two single female best friends (Alexandra Daddario, Kate Upton) who find themselves competing for the same guy (Matt Barr) during an extended layover in St. Louis when their plane is rerouted due to a hurricane warning. Matt Jones, Rob Corddry, Kal Penn and Molly Shannon are also part of the cast. Directed by William H. Macy (Rudderless).
Not sure what compelled Macy to direct this. Besides the obvious.

johnny sokko and his flying robot

A young boy aids in the fight against a mechanized terrorist organization as the sole controller of a prototype giant robot.

I couldn’t sleep, so I wandered into the weird and comforting landscape of UHF television’s modern equivalent, which in this case is a digital antenna station on 56.4 here in Los Angeles, called Comet TV*

For the next half hour, I watched this magnificently bizarre thing called Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot. As far as I can tell, there’s this little kid called Johnny Sokko, and like all the other kids in school were all “Johnny Sokko, you’re a stupid face!” so he was like “h*ck you guys, I’m going to get a giant robot and live on a boat for some reason. Oh, and also, I’m like 8 or whatever, and I’m in charge of a giant flying murder machine. So watch your step, bitches.” Johnny gets this this giant robot who flies, and he controls him by issuing commands into a gold wristwatch. Instead of telling the robot to breakdance for his endless amusement, Johnny cries a lot and makes the robot save the world from a squid guy or something who lives in a sunken spaceship, adjacent to a pineapple under the sea? It’s all a little fuzzy in the translation, I’ll be honest, but I think I got the gist of it.

Anyway, I probably made some of that up, but this is all true: There’s a Flying Robot who is vaguely Egyptian. There’s a Gargoyle Gang, the Emperor Guillotine, a military group of children who are called Team Unicorn and are the only thing between Earth’s survival and intergalactic destruction for some reason, and all the bizarre 1960s Kaiju visual effects you could ever hope for. The music is exactly what you want it to be, and at one point, an entire freeway overpass is destroyed, because who among us hasn’t wanted to do that!

A quick search on a few of the Internets made it clear to me that I was not just way late to the party on this (the short I saw was originally released in Japan in 1967, as Giant Robo because obviously) but I am also discovering this literally decades after it became popular with the cool kids. So if you’re like OH GREAT WIL WHEATON THANKS FOR WASTING MY TIME WITH SOMETHING I ALREADY KNEW ABOUT now you can feel like a jerk because it’s new to me, Roland. It’s new to me!

It’s weird, and fun, and overflowing with potential audio samples, so I thought I would share it with you today. Here’s what I think is the first episode, in which we meet Johnny Sokko, the Flying Robot, an unsettling sea monster, and more:

There are several collections of Johnny Sokko films at the Internet Archive. I guess you can also buy remastered DVDs if you want to go that route (though I strongly believe that the faded and aged look of the originals at archive.org is a significant contributor to the charm of the thing.)

Good luck. We’re all counting on you.

*It’s owned by the profoundly evil Sinclair Broadcasting Group, which is a giant bummer. You can buy evil offsets by supporting ACLU and SPLC, if it makes you feel better.

Dental Damnation.

Where to fucking start?

"The plan was perfect. My appointment at 7am, Kevin's at 4pm.
WAS.
"

We showed up at 6:45 so I could handle an paperwork, but the door would not open until 7am, as demonstrated by other people that had the same idea as us. let us begin the timeline.

7am to 9am
Paperwork, picking, meet the dentist, meet the hygienist, xrays. A sensor was out causing multiple Xrays to be made over and over and over. I had to say - twice - "You do know that you're depending on the rear right molar to support this sensor at this angle - and it's one that's missing?"
by 9am - there is paperwork, payment ("Here's what insurance should cover, here's what you cover" Why do I have a comma in my amount?) working out a payment plan. I am sent to go eat because I won't be eating again that day.

9am to 10am
So Kevin and I dined at a roadside cafe, complete with a table where old folks showed up and left in a steady trickle and kept the conversation going. We heard local politics, remarks on kids these days, chocolate discussions, birthday plans, AR 15 break downs and even a few jokes.

10am to 10:45am
I got back, they numbed me and stuffed a hose under my nose to start the gas. They left me in that room alone for so long, I sent for my phone. This became a theme.

10:50am to 1:50am
When shit got real )

Oh and nearly 16 more xrays. Over and over - jamming the sensor edge into the socket of the broken tooth. That wasn't numbed.

4:08pm - Temp set and they let me leave. Turns out 6 Day Dental had one dentist the entire day. She was leaving me to tend to other patients. I rushed Kevin out the door and into Roanoke traffic where we barely made it to his diagnostic appointment so we can check on his kidneys and liver. They had paperwork for his cholesterol.
God Fucking Dammit.
They stabbed him quickly and we left. 4 hurricanes later and a pain pill the size of a Geritol, I am able to function. The nerve was still unhappy and shot a path of persistent pain up the side of my head. It was like a crack on a block of ice.

So I am going to
1: Buy a waterpik so I can clean out the hole on the right side.
2: Find out how much is the cost for just the work on the left, how much is the crown I'm promised - pay only that and LEAVE THAT PLACE.
3: Find new dentist to handle the right side of the mouth.
4: Call the liver/kidney doc and ask what the ungoldy hell is going on now. See, last day we took off for appointments, they neglected to tell Kevin he needed to take labs and get the reports to them. They needed them handled the week prior and they called about it ... 28 hours before the appointment. To say they needed them a week ago.

I'm not unreasonable on this - this was an excellent clinic 5 years ago. However, I don't see any updates in that clinic. It's getting dingy, the equipment is old and failing and the apparent lack of staff are all marks against this.
Yes, being kept from 7am to 4pm HAS colored my point of view.
After all - that is now one day unpaid. I was hoping to get paid at least 3 hours.
