Whoops

I realize I haven't posted in here for a decent amount of time aka at least two weeks which is a bit long for myself.

So I guess going back a couple weekends ago, I did fulfill one of my summer bucket list items which was going to a Ren Faire. Unfortunately the weather that weekend was brutal (44C all weekend) so it wasn't very enjoyable. We (myself, Mia and Liz) ended up going up pretty early aka 10am and then leaving by around 12:30pm because again, way too hot. We bought a couple fun items (I bought a "potion" aka some tea thing in a cute jar, Mia bought a floral crown, Liz bought these cool black bloomer shorts) and saw some birds of prey presentation, but yeah. I feel like this should be more of a fall activity, I dunno. The weather made me extremely grumpy. Oh and I also accidentally left my wallet there and the location was super far and there was no way I was going all the way back up that day. An organizer at the fair found it and left it at the office. Since Simon was off he went up there during the week and got it for me. Luckily nothing was taken, not even my $5 so thank you honest person who didn't steal my identity/funds.

Then later that week my phone decided it didn't want to charge on 95% of charging devices anymore (I tried multiple) and since it was nearing 5 years I decided to just get a new one which is a Google Pixel 9. My old one was a Pixel 6 so it's basically the same format which I like.

Writing course is going well. We had last week off because it was on Canada Day. We had our first assignment which I think I did ok one (we only get pass or fail and I passed) the teacher wrote my story was "pretty good" among much corrections/constructive criticism. Trust if you want to be humbled take a writing class. It's good but also you are like damn... My work shop is not this Tuesday but next and I'm a bit scared. Our class is pretty nice though and the comments are encouraging and not mean. I want to continue the creative writing certificate, but I won't be doing anything until next spring cuz I need to just focus on my courses for school as it is finally my last year and I just want to get through it.

This past weekend I didn't do much, just had a movie night at my aunt Brenda's with many of my family/cousins. It was fun, though the movie we watched was kind of stupid (Case 39). Kind of want to just do a smaller horror movie night with my aunt Bernie, because while I do like seeing everyone, she is my favourite relative to hang out with.

Work is still annoying but has slowed down. My boss was on vacation this week so I'm hoping to have a meeting with her when she's back next week. I want to discuss having someone aka Clarissa do the GFL inbox with me as it is so consistent I have to focus on it all the time. So I am hoping maybe she can do afternoons and I do mornings or vice versa. I want some new clients as only having this one is boring and I don't feel like I'm learning...well I do because I've dealt with so much shit with this client (not them specifically, but this account), and I want to have other accounts to learn from. There's other things I have to discuss with her too, but yeah. Again, it's going to suck when her and Paola (second in command) are in their new roles. I'm honestly scared, but thank God Jacquie my old boss is still like you can always ask questions in our regular CSS chat. I find lately it's mostly dealing with certain people at my job that's making it unenjoyable. People in roles higher than me who don't know what they are doing and just some men who are super arrogant. I have no idea if I will stay in insurance long term. It really depends when I'm done my Masters. Either way, after I'll probably start taking CIP courses just in case, but I do want to get out of this role eventually. I hate kind of being the one expected to know everything, take on everything, do other's jobs for them etc.

Simon had go to back to his shrink this past week. They are getting him off the benzo as it is not good long term (can cause dementia) and he's changed his meds yet again. He seems to be ok, not the high, still a bit anxious but nothing too bad. I wish he would just be able to find meds that let him feel normal. He also may be off work longer than the 19th as he will have to take time to adjust to his new medication. At least he's getting paid exactly the same so that's good.

Pretty much have finished unpacking/decorating our place. It feels really cozy and like home now. My mom came to see it on Canada Day and she really liked it. I feel really happy here, still going to the gym pretty regularly since it's just in the basement. Again, I can see us being here long term i.e. until we buy property (if we ever do). It's a pretty good location. Speaking of Canada Day, it was on Tuesday (which kinda sucked and made the work week feel off), but I ended up going to the beach to watch the big fireworks show and it was pretty cool. I would not have gone if I couldn't walk there easily as the traffic/buses were insane, but it was a good experience and I would go again next year.

Ava was acting listless and had some weird coloured poop so Simon took a stool sample to the vet today and they got back to us so quickly. She has a bacterial infection so they gave us meds and probiotics so hopefully she feels better soon.

I was thinking I never posted my summer plans list so here it is:

-Go visit Laura in Kingston for a long weekend (we were supposed to go to Quebec but she's having some medical issues so we're just going to stay at her place and do some daytrips)
-Concerts - Neil Young, LCD Soundsystem, Pulp (already saw Metric in early June)
-Going to Cambridge on July 12th to meet up with old Allianz people so yes this is the year of meeting up with old co-workers apparently (did Starbucks crew earlier this year)
-Beach days. I accidentally bought TWO beach umbrellas/chair (meant to get only one aka thought it was only one), so going to try and use it tomorrow as we are getting another goddamn heat wave and I don't live far from the beach. There's an Olympic pool there so I think I will just end up going there cuz the lake is actually gross to swim in and I want to swim.
-Go to see Dream in High Park with Simon. It's a summer thing where actors perform Shakespeare plays in the park. This year they are doing Romeo and Juliet.
-Maybe go to a baseball game with my dad (has to be when the Yankees are playing as that's his team)
-First weekend in September going to a cottage for my birthday with Simon
-Next weekend in September, (my actual birthday) hopefully having a girls gathering, my plan is drag brunch, going to the theraputic waters, and then Medieval Times for dinner.
-I booked the last week of August off so maybe go to the CNE with someone aka Simon or my dad or someone else.
-Get back into BJJ hopefully in August (we also may have a women's BJJ pot luck in August)
-Read more/relax more/continue writing once the course is over

This entry was kind of all over the place, but that's ok. Hopefully next time I will not take so long to update!

UC_XMEN FIC MEME > PROMPTS NEEDED

Event Info: Help is needed for [community profile] uc_xmen new fic meme/drabble-a-thon for X-Men unconventional ships. So in the style of the various fic memes and oxoniensis' Porn Battles - comment with prompts & I'll post a masterlist by July 6th. That gives us about two weeks for prompts and then a free-for-all to grab the prompts and start writing.

Important Dates: Collecting Prompts until July 6, 2025, which is when a new post with all the prompts will be organized and viewable for anyone to grab and start writing! No time limit after that!

Notes/Other Key Info: PROMPT AS MUCH OR AS LITTLE AS YOU WISH! THE MORE THE MERRIER! You want a full sentence or song title or whatever go ahead, or you can just do simple one or two worded prompts. If you have more than one prompt for a pairing, please separate by a comma (such as Cyclops/Rogue - bed, kiss, butterfly kisses) Comment as many times as you want, or just edit your comments before July 6th. I'll make a Masterpost for all the prompts that day and start the challenge then. If it happens where no one comments, I'll try to make up my own list up with various pairings, not just everything I ship.

Friday Five Friend Edition

From this week's [community profile] thefridayfive:

  1. Who is your best friend? Without a doubt, L., though I suppose this answer is a bit of a cheat. But I like knowing that my partner is my best friend, and I'd like to think that whatever changes come about in our lives, things will always manage to remain that way.
  2. Why did you become friends? We were two awkward ducks in the freshman high school pond. Both unpopular, both entirely too nerdy for our own good, and we shared a lot of common spaces. I have to assume that if someone has seen and stayed with me through my cringey, dramatic, and awkward teen years, they are around for the long haul.
  3. How did you meet? Shared classes in secondary school, but largely because we both rode a "2nd shift" bus home in the afternoons (school district did not have enough buses, so it would conduct one route then return for the second load, leaving a bunch of young people to squander time in the corners of the halls making terrible jokes.) We were among the students whose parents did not pick them up or provide them cars to drive with.
  4. Why have you stayed friends? Ooof, well, as friends, we confided a lot in one another, in ways that are more vulnerable than most. So friendship turned to dating, which, inarguably, was terrible during those years, because of immaturity and selfishness. We broke up when we separated for college, but always kept in touch, because even though there were times we'd hurt each other, we still cared for each other. Later we reconnected, as friends, which eventually turned into a marriage, which is a high stakes way of making sure you stay friends.
  5. How long (realistically) do you think you'll be friends? Oh, I don't know. I can hope for a lifetime, though, can't I?

The Running Man, Relay, Downton Abbey: Grand Finale, Sentimental Value, Apocalypse in the Tropics

The Running Man     HD720p 40MB
Full trailer for Edgar Wright's (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, Baby Driver) take on Stephen King's dystopian novel. In a near-future society, The Running Man is the top-rated show on television - a deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public and each day bringing a greater cash reward. Desperate to save his sick daughter, working-class Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is convinced by the show’s charming but ruthless producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the game as a last resort. But Ben’s defiance, instincts, and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favorite - and a threat to the entire system. Also part of the cast are Colman Domingo, Michael Cera, Katy O’Brian, Jayme Lawson, Karl Glusman, Lee Pace, Emilia Jones and William H. Macy.
I've never seen the original.

Relay     HD720p 32MB
Conspiracy thriller about a world-class "fixer" (Riz Ahmed) who specializes in brokering lucrative payoffs between corrupt corporations and the individuals who threaten their ruin. He keeps his identity a secret through meticulous planning and always follows an exacting set of rules. But when a message arrives one day from a potential client (Lily James) needing his protection just to stay alive, the rules quickly start to change. Sam Worthington is also part of the cast. Directed by David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water, Perfect Sense, Hallam Foe).
According to festival reviews goes a little overboard towards the end, but this looks promising.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale     HD1080p 25MB
Full trailer for the third movie based on the characters of the TV series. It follows the Crawley family and their staff as they enter the 1930s. When Mary (Michelle Dockery) finds herself at the center of a public scandal and the family faces financial trouble, the entire household grapples with the threat of social disgrace. The Crawleys must embrace change as the staff prepares for a new chapter with the next generation leading Downton Abbey into the future. Returning cast members include Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Cartern Joanne Froggatt, Laura Carmichael and Dominic West. New additions are Paul Giamatti, Alessandro Nivola and Joely Richardson. Again directed by Simon Curtis (Woman in Gold, My Week with Marilyn, Goodbye Christopher Robin).

Sentimental Value - Affeksjonsverdi     HD720p 28MB
Family drama from Norway in which sisters Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) reunite with their estranged father (Stellan Skarsgård9, a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. When Nora turns it down, she soon discovers he has given her part to an eager young Hollywood star (Elle Fanning). Suddenly, the two sisters must navigate their complicated relationship with their father — and deal with an American star dropped right into the middle of their complex family dynamics. Directed by Joachim Trier (The Worst Person in the World, Louder than Bombs, Thelma).
Was awarded the Grand Prize this year in Cannes, where it received mostly very favourable reviews.

Apocalypse in the Tropics     HD1080p 36MB
Documentary that investigates the increasingly powerful grip that faith leaders hold over politics in Brazil. It gained extraordinary access to the country’s top political leaders, including President Lula and former President Bolsonaro, as well as to Brazil’s most famous televangelist: a larger-than-life pastor who plays the puppet master to the far-right leader.
It's a global disease. Will start streaming on Netflix July 14th.

As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. Rebuilding journal search again

We're having to rebuild the search server again (previously, previously). It will take a few days to reindex all the content.

Meanwhile search services should be running, but probably returning no results or incomplete results for most queries.

catching halos on the moon

Posted by Wil

I had such a good time with my garden last season. It was the first time I had ever capital-t Tended a garden in my life, and it was a deeply meaningful experience for me. I learned a lot about myself in the process, because I kept allowing my garden to be a metaphor. Also, I had more tomatoes than I could give away, the biggest pumpkin I have ever seen, peppers forever, and sunflowers that went up to here.

I have been intensely focused on CPTSD recovery from child abuse for a couple of years. I work on it in therapy every week, and I work on it in between sessions, when I’m able. Walking my garden twice a day gave me lots of opportunities to reflect on The Work that I was doing, and I’m pretty sure it gave me an extra d4+1 on all my saves.

I live in zone 10B, and we can grow just about anything here, all year long, if we’re willing to do some extra work during the frigid 40 degree nights we endure for up to a whole week every January. I’ve never done that before, because I’ve never felt connected enough to my garden to get the winter survival gear out of the trunk.

But this past winter, I thought I’d give it a go. I looked into it, and saw that most of the winter stuff available to me didn’t interest me enough to plant and Tend it. But I read about planting a cover crop, and that sounded pretty cool. I liked the idea of putting a ton of seeds down and staying out of their way while they did their thing for a couple of months.

I ended up choosing a mixture of oats, peas, and radishes. I cut everything down to a nub, to let the roots die off and nourish the soil, and tossed the seeds all over the place.

Over the winter, they sprouted and grew into one hell of a cover crop. The peas produced beautiful, delicate, purple and white flowers. The oats got so tall, and surprisingly smelled kind of sweet, too. Marlowe loved eating big blades of grass every day. I noticed that they sort of whistled or hummed softly when the breeze was just right. Depending on the sunlight, they looked green or blue.

About a month ago, they started to dry up. Marlowe lost interest in the grass, which I presume wasn’t as sweet as it was when it was still cold at night. Anne and I planned this season’s garden, with fewer tomatoes, and I began to prepare the planting beds.

I started clearing the cover crop out, one section at a time. The peas were all dead and crumbled in my hands. I turned them into the soil. There was one radish, a big daikon-looking thing that filled the air with a spicy blast when I yanked it up. Then there were the oats, three and four feet tall, growing in thick clumps that formed a tiny forest for ants. I pulled them out, one at a time, shaking all the soil off the roots. Dust clung to my hands and forearms.

I started on one side, and worked my way down and around, one clump at a time. The soil came up and fell off the roots easily. It fell back into fluffy mounds that I swept into the holes left behind. I wiped the sweat off my brow with the back of my right hand, then wiped the mud I’d left behind with my left hand. I tried both forearms before I started laughing and accepted my muddy forehead.

I kept working, silently thanking the oats for doing exactly what they were asked to do as I cleared one and then the next and the next.

I blinked sweat out of my eyes, shook some mud off my head, and looked at the newly-cleared garden. The soil was fluffy and rich. Loamy, I think they call it. It was ready for the growing season, and I was ready to plant it.

But first, in the final corner, there were a couple clumps of very tall, very thick, oats to pull out. I considered leaving them, so Marlowe could continue to have her grass snacks, but she hasn’t been that interested for about two weeks, at least.

“You have done all that was asked of you,” I said, “you can rest, now.” I wrapped my hand about the base of the clump nearest to me and gently pulled it up. I shook the soil out of its roots, put it to the side, and moved on to the next one. I stopped suddenly and stared through the little forest.

There was a deep green … something … against the wooden edge of the planter. Some kind of hornworm, maybe? A beetle I’ve never seen before? What the hell is that?

I parted the stalks and saw a single jalapeño hanging from the top of a single stalk. The nub I cut back at the end of last year, safely hidden by the cover crop, grew back at some point, flowered, and produced a single, perfect, beautiful fruit while nobody was looking, or expecting anything from it. I looked closer and two additional flowers revealed themselves.

I cleared the remaining oats, careful to not disturb my unexpected jalapeño. It’s obviously thriving, but the flowers are so delicate before they begin to bear fruit; they must be treated with care, even if that just means being careful around them. It’s good to do that, from time to time, I think: remember to take care. We can easily damage something we aren’t even thinking about, when we are careless.

I didn’t expect anything from the cover crop. I just put it down and hoped the seeds would grow. I didn’t expect anything from this jalapeño. In fact, Mr. Bond, I expected it to die.

It’s amazing what happens when we plant seeds, and tend to our gardens, without any expectations, isn’t it?

Friday Five - Teaching Edition

Questions from [community profile] thefridayfive:

1. Who was your favorite teacher? and 2. Why was that teacher so special?

Without a doubt, it was Patricia Adams Lent, who taught my AG middle school English classes from 6th-8th grade. She recognized that I was a socially awkward oddball stuck in my own head, and she was so very, very kind to me when I had no real friends. She was a rigorous instructor, she helped form/improve my writing/editing skills, but also was a very much a teacher of critical thinking. Outside of that, she led drama activities, a literary magazine, and even enjoined me for bike rides in the countryside outside of class. On my middle school graduation, she made me an actual walking stick (made from an apple tree, carved and cured and polished and with my name and the dates carved in it).

3. Do you think teachers get paid enough? Well, having very close family as teachers I must say I am pretty well-acquainted with the responsibilities and the paycheck, and no, it is not nearly enough, not for the extra work and activities that are required, not for the enormous disrespect and wringers that they are put through by students and parents and administrations and political pontificators. There's so much less freedom in teaching than there used to be, which seems such a disservice to all involved.

4. Do you have a favorite year of school? Not really. School was mostly miserable for me, I connected more with the adults than the other students, with a few exceptions, so I mostly focused on the work. I did enjoy the last two years as I was starting to finally feel more comfortable with myself, but given that I cocked everything up right after high school, I don't look at that former version of myself very kindly. (They were intelligent but also young and naive, I really should forgive them someday.)

5. If you could travel back in time and tell yourself something now that would have helped you get through school, what would you say? Calling on Mr. Rogers, I guess I'd say "Look for the helpers." They are the only ones to have helped me survive it.

Netflix Binge: Dept. Q

Kevin and I just binge-watched this entire series Sunday. I snagged the first episode Friday night and then Sunday morning, I took it up again and watched episode 2 and part of 3. When Kevin woke up, I restarted the series and we were hooked.
If you liked The Blind Spot or British police procedurals like Midsomer Murders, this is a welcome series. There is only one season and it's all wrapped around a single cold case - which is the "schtick": they are solving cold case files. This show came out at the very end of May so the jury is still out if there will be another season. I hope so. This has legs and is set up smoothly for more seasons.
The characters are NOT predictable or animated tropes. In fact, there is a lot of solid character backstory and development to redeem even the most unlikable or annoying characters. Don't look up the actors in the middle of it - I did and it gave away a piece of the plot. Oooof.

Give it a watch and please give it a thumbs up - or even 2.

Warning: Excessively Scottish. Have subtitles on if you have trouble with accents. Sound quality is excellent, though.
