It's a Blockbuster weekend...
Went to Blockbuster after work yesterday and picked up
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
The 40 Year Old Virgin
Cinderella Man
The Interpreter
Must Love Dogs
Flightplan
So far have watched
Flightplan
I love Jodie Foster. I've followed her career since she was a kid. I'll see her in anything, for she is that awesome. This movie was pretty good. I know that reviews have been mixed, but I liked it well enough. Kept me watching, and wasn't boring in the slightest. Plot: A new widow (Foster) and her daughter are flying from Berlin to New York with the husband's casket. Settled in their seats, the woman takes a nap, only to awaken to find the little girl missing, with nobody having seen her... she isn't even on the flight's passenger manifest. Tension and suspense builds as the hunt is on to find the little girl and other twists begin to unfold. Gets kind of far fetched but entertaining anyway.
Big ol' plothole at the end, and I feel that the end result could have been gone about in an easier way on the part of the "bad guys" but all in all yes, a good thriller. And oh yes... mad props for Sean Bean as the flight's Captain!

The Exorcism of Emily Rose
I had to see if this one was anywhere near as scary as The Exorcist. And since it's based on a true story, well, that drew me in too. Plot: A lawyer (played by Laura Linney) takes on a case to defend a priest (played by the always great Tom Wilkinson) charged with the negligent homicide of a young girl named Emily Rose (played by Jennifer Carpenter) after she dies post exorcism. What really happened during the exorcism? Was Emily really posessed by demons? The film leaves you with many thought provoking and unanswered questions.
This was really well done. Was it as scary as The Exorcist? They are two different movies, and both equally as chilling. Jennifer Carpenter's performance here is quite effective as Emily and there are a few truly freaky sequences.
And let me just say, my eyes actually flew open last night, and in the dark, I looked at the digital clock. 3am. *shudders*
I'm not joking.

I'll update again as I watch the others.

Just because I always see every damn movie that comes out:
The 40 Year Old Virgin
You will laugh your ass off. I had to rent it even after seeing it in the theatre, because the audience was laughing so much that we all missed parts of it. Steve Carell is brilliant.
Cinderella Man
Filmed in Toronto - I got to watch them turning one of our old buildings into Madison Square Garden. The movie itself is fairly predictable, but it's a nice story and it was well done.
The Interpreter
Not nearly as good as I was hoping. There wasn't much "thrill" to it, for being a thriller and all. But Sean Penn is always great, and there IS an interesting twist at the end.
Must Love Dogs
Blah. Just...blah. I wish John Cusack would stop being the guy from Say Anything... because he's in his 40s now and it's NOT WORKING! I guess for fluff it's all right.
As for Flightplan, I was disappointed when I saw it in theatre, but I rented it this past week & a second viewing left a more favourable feeling. Sean Bean was good as the captain. Plus I LOOOOOOOOVE Peter Sarsgaard (in case you couldn't tell by my icon!) and Jodie Foster. DId you notice that the daughter looked like she could have been their offspring? Weird!
And Exorcism... wasn't what I was expecting, but there were enough creepy parts (you know the ones I mean - like when her boyfriend wakes up and she's not in bed...!!!!) to make it a good scary movie. Plus I thought the court stuff was really interesting. So...yeah. We agree on those two - you'll have to let me know if you feel the same way about the other four! (You should also rent Junebug (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/junebug/) sometime soon - I just saw it and I really enjoyed it.)
Re: Just because I always see every damn movie that comes out:
YES! She did look like she could actually be their daughter, you're right!
I'll post reviews later. Thank you for your insights and your recommendation... I'll check Junebug out.
