Twilight Zone marathon coming up!

Time for another TZ marathon on Sci-Fi! Every year they do one at New Years and one over July 4.

July 3 is Ringo Starr day, I'll be at the Hard Rock most of the day and into the night, so I don't know how much watching I'll do that day, and I am requesting the 4th off so we'll see what happens *crosses fingers* But I'll highlight my favorite, "can't miss" episodes, many of which I've taped and / or have on DVD now... I recommend these.

My July 3 Highlights

9:30 am The Masks
10:30 am The Bewitchin' Pool
11:00 am I Sing The Body Electric
1:30 pm The Invaders (Agnes Moorehead fighting itty bitty space guys! LOVE)
2:00 pm Nightmare as a Child
2:30 pm Eye of the Beholder (this one is a GIVEN, it's shown every single marathon)
4:00 pm The Monsters are Due on Maple Street
5:00 pm Kick The Can (This is the inspiration for the movie "Cocoon")
8:30 pm Nightmare at 20,000 Feet
9:30 pm In The Praise of Pip
10:00 pm Living Doll ("I'm Talky Tina and I'm going to kill you!")
11:30 pm The Obsolete Man (I! AM! NOT! OBSOLETE!)
12:30 am Nothing in the Dark
4:00 am Miniature (I swear this one is great, made me want a really cool doll house)

At 6am they break for Paid Programming for two hours...

My July 4 Highlights

8:00 am Stopover In A Quiet Town
10:00 am To Serve Man ("It's a COOKBOOK!!")
1:00 pm King Nine Will Not Return (this is one I don't get to see often!)
2:30 pm A Most Unusual Camera
3:30 pm The Howling Man
5:00 pm Five Characters In Search of an Exit (kudos, Sci-Fi! You showed this last marathon too, after not having had it on in a long time! YAY! Up there in my top five!)
5:30 pm Midnight Sun
6:30 pm The Last Night of a Jockey (GREAT performance by Mickey Rooney here! Most excellent!)
7:00 pm It's A Good Life (another that's a GIVEN... they almost HAVE to show certain eps, right?)
8:00 pm A Penny For Your Thoughts
8:30 pm Two
10:00 pm Cavender is Coming (Carol Burnett is in this one. I think it's the only real comic ep of TZ I've ever seen. Catch it, it's different from the normal ep and weirdly contains a laugh track!)
11:00 pm A Passage for Trumpet (Jack Klugman was so great in this one!!!)
5:00 am On Thursday We Leave for Home

And a GLARING omission this time! No "Time Enough At Last"!! That surprises me because there are like five eps that make each and EVERY marathon and this is one of them, one of the beloved ones. WOW. *shakes head* But they did counter that with a couple of rare ones that don't get the love as often, so I guess. But... but... BURGESS MEREDITH! *pouts* Ah well, I'll pull out the DVD and make it part of the marathon on my own then! LOL!

What are your favorites?

"The Bewitchin' Pool" has been one of my fave stories since I was a little kid. It may be the first episode I ever remember seeing.

I swear they show "The Invaders" ALL the time too. Agnes Moorehead is brilliant in it though.

Wasn't "Kick the Can" also used in the TZ Movie, the story that Spielberg directed? I've never seen the original.

"It's a GOOD Life" is still one of the most creepy things ever. I adore Bill Mumy anyway (just cos he's a very hoopy frood) but such a performance from such a little kid. The original story by Jerome Bixby is even creepier though.

I'm just rambling, of course. :-p I love them all. I prolly will be tuning in for some of it. I always do.

[identity profile] hippie-chick.livejournal.com 2008-06-26 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! They did "Kick The Can" for the movie too. And I agree about Bewitchin' Pool... I've loved that one for a long time. Written and directed by "The Waltons" director Earl Hamner and I love that Mary Badham is in it (Scout from "To Kill A Mockingbird") too.

Yes, "Invaders" is a classic always shown one, and Agnes was great in it.

Also agree about "Good Life"... it's just so... creepy. They remade that one for the movie, but it just didn't hold the kick that the episode did. Billy Mumy was fantastic and I concur about Jerome Bixby.

I'm just still shocked that I don't see "Time Enough At Last" on the schedule, because it's one of those "it's a given" marathon episodes just like "Good Life". But like I said, it's going to be part of MY marathon anyway. *winks*

Oh! Another thought popped in about Bewitchin' Pool. Mary Badham's voice was dubbed by June Foray (voice of Rocky the Squirrel!!!!) for some scenes. June also voices "Talky Tina". :D

I didnt know that Hamner had written that episode -- cool! I was just going to look it up on IMDB because I realized I had no idea who was behind it. LOL (My first guesses were: Serling or Richard Matheson) I also didn't know it was Mary Badham but other than Gregory Peck and Robert Duvall, I had no clue who was in "To Kill A Mockingbird", least of all the kids. ;)

It is pretty surprising that "Time Enough at Last" isn't on the schedule. I didn't look at the whole thing -- was "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" (I think that's the right title) on the schedule this year? It's just been referenced a lot lately due to a recent episode of Dr Who (which is wonderfully creepy and very much in the vein of a TZ episode).

I love June Foray! One of the funniest things to me is that she actually voiced the original (real) Chatty Cathy doll. I'm not sure if it was just the prototype or the first version of her that was out on the market. But how creepy that she also did Talky Tina. *evil grin*

(ETA: And of course, no marathon is every completely without "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" which is why I also switched my icon. "THERE'S A MONSTER ON THE WIIIIIIIIIIIIING!111!")

Haha! I love Shatner in that episode. And I realized I don't have a TZ based icon any more, so I just made one. LOL!

Yes, Maple Street is on at 4pm on July 3.

Whee! Shatner was actually a good actor back in the day. Okay, he's a little OTT on TZ, but still amusing. Now he's just a big FAT ham. ;)

Yay for Maple Street.

"The Bewitchin' Pool" was my first episode! I always remembered about the episode even when I couldn't remember what the show was. When I got older and found out I was so happy!

[identity profile] hippie-chick.livejournal.com 2008-06-26 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Love it. And remarkably enough, it wasn't one of the better liked / loved episodes. It was the very last episode of TZ ever actually.

[identity profile] dianthus-pink.livejournal.com 2008-06-26 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's one of the happier episodes, just sweet and not spooky. I didn't know it was the last episode!

[identity profile] ragdoll.livejournal.com 2008-06-26 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I just related to it because it was about kids and how they found a way to be happy. I always wanted to find another, happier world on the other end of my swimming pool too.

I wasn't sure if it was TZ or Outer Limits for a while, just that it was a story I liked.

When I was a kid and first discovered the Twilight Zone, I loved the episode A Kind of a Stopwatch, where the main character is given a watch that will stop time. I haven't seen that one in a long time. Many of my other favs are in the marathon. Thanks for the heads up!

[identity profile] hippie-chick.livejournal.com 2008-06-26 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! I know that one!! It's a goodie.

And you're welcome, I was thinking about it, checked the schedule and thought I'd post since it'll be a busy week for many of us so we can plan ahead and tape / DVR stuff. :)

[identity profile] dianthus-pink.livejournal.com 2008-06-26 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Time Enough at Last" is my all-time favorite and I cry every time I watch it. "The Masks" is right up there, I thought that was so clever the first time I saw it. I also love "Midnight Sun" and "I Sing the Body Electric". I guess all those would be in my top 5 but I can't pick out the 5th. It's a tie between "The After Hours" and "Number 12 Looks Just Like You"

I am sad because I will be out of town for the marathon. *sob*

We just rented one disc of the show (apparently it was the time-travel disc) and I really liked the episode with Buster Keaton.

[identity profile] hippie-chick.livejournal.com 2008-06-26 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
AH! "Once Upon A Time", right? The time traveling helmet or somesuch. Hee!

Third season I think... I thought it an alright episode.

[identity profile] mrwhipee.livejournal.com 2008-06-26 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved that one too, but obviously my rating of the episode is biased by my love for Keaton. Even older, past his prime Keaton is still a joy to watch.

Favorite TZ Episodes

Thanks for reminding of the Sci-Fi Channel's bi-annual TZ Marathon. Here are some of my favorite episodes:

Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up? (Jack Elam cracks me up in this episode)
One For the Angels
A World Of His Own (Rod's first onscreen appearance on the show)
The Four of Us Are Dying
Mirror Image
The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street (the ending to this one still creeps me out)
A Nice Place To visit
A Penny For Your Thoughts
The Dummy
A Most Unusual Camera
The Rip Van Winkle Caper
Five Characters In Search Of An Exit
The Last Night Of A Jockey
Caesar and Me (feat. a young Morgan Brittany, when she was still known as Suzanne Cupito)

I keep meaning to get the latest edition of The Twilight Zone Companion. My copy is over 20 yrs old and has seen better days.

Also good choices for favorites! :) I own so many on DVD now that it's great to be able to pull one out and watch when I think about it. :)

I had the Companion at one time, and it seems to have disappeared, probably when we moved. Will have to replace it.
