Where The Woodbine Twineth.
Jan. 2nd, 2006 09:07 amMom and I got talking last night after the "Living Doll" episode of Twilight Zone aired about the ones that scared us or not as much scared as haunted us. Anyway. She brought up one I hadn't thought about in the LONGEST time. Her absolute favorite. She couldn't remember if it was a Zone, a Night Gallery or what.
"Nell Snyder has been taking care of her orphaned niece and has been growing more and more concerned over her niece's behavior. Her niece continually blames all the trouble she causes on an imaginary friend named Mr. Peppercorn. When the girl's grandfather Captain King Snyder gives her a Creole voodoo doll, Nell grows more and more worried. Her nieces says the doll came from Mr. Peppercorn. She names it Numa and treats as if it were a real person. Eventually, Nell becomes convinced that the doll is real and that it is trying to take her niece's soul. She follows her neice and Numa into the forest. There she frightens her away, not realizing that the switch has already occurred. She later sees the doll and discovers that it bears her niece's face."
Synopsis from here.
Turns out, memory got muddled, and it was not Rod Serling after all but aired on The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. I remember seeing it once. Very unsettling, otherworldly and creepy.
This was an adaptation of a short story called "Where The Woodbine Twineth" by Manly Wade Wellman which can be found in the book The Devil Is Not Mocked And Other Warnings: The Selected Stories of Manly Wade Wellman vol.2.
I would LOVE to find this on DVD for my mom's birthday this year. I've got til April to track it down. But I know it's one she'd love to own. In fact all I can find is Season One of Alfred Hitchcock Presents on Amazon. I found Where The Woodbine Twineth on VHS but I'd rather not get it on that format. So if you guys happen to know where to locate this and can point me in that direction it would be fantastic.
