Because there isn't really anything new or interesting to tell you about at the moment. :) First ten songs that come up, shuffled on iTunes:

01. james taylor // carolina in my mind
Whisper something soft and kind
And hey babe, the sky's on fire
I'm dying, ain't I?
Gone to Carolina in my mind...

02. eagles // desperado
And freedom oh freedom
Well that's just some people talkin'
Your prison is walkin' through
This world all alone

03. the black keys // everlasting light
Oh baby, can't you see
It's shining just for you
Loneliness is over
Dog days are through
They're through...

04. radiohead // fake plastic trees
She Looks like the real thing
She tastes like the real thing
My fake plastic love

05. crosby, stills, and nash // 49 bye-byes
Write if you think of it, maybe.
Know I love you. (Know I love you)
Go if it means that much to you.
Hey, but you can run, baby;
If the feeling's wrong before too long it's crazy.

06. the beatles // the end
And in the end, the love you take
Is equal to the love you make.

07. derek and the dominoes // layla
Let's make the best of the situation
Before I finally go insane.
Please don't say I'll never find a way
And tell me all my love's in vain.

08. the doors // light my fire
The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

09. the cyrkle // red rubber ball
And I think it's gonna be all right
Yeah, the worst is over now
The mornin' sun is shinin' like a red rubber ball

10. elton john // honky cat
You better get back, honky cat
Living in the city ain't where it's at
It's like trying to find gold in a silver mine
It's like trying to drink whiskey from a bottle of wine
hippie_chick: (John / peace)

There's room at the top they're telling you still.
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill,
if you want to be like the folks on the hill...
hippie_chick: (Marie Antoinette / don't wanna get up.)
I think about this song sometimes on days when I feel more troubled and weighted down.

Think About Your Troubles - Harry Nilsson

Sit beside the breakfast table
Think about your troubles
Pour yourself a cup of tea
And think about the bubbles

You can take your teardrops
And drop them in a teacup
Take them down to the riverside
And throw them over the side
To be swept up by a current
And taken to the ocean
To be eaten by some fishes
Who were eaten by some fishes
And swallowed by a whale
Who grew so old
He decomposed

He died and left his body
To the bottom of the ocean
Now everybody knows
That when a body decomposes
The basic elements
Are given back to the ocean

And the sea does what it oughta
And soon there's salty water
(That's not too good for drinking)
'Cause it tastes just like a teardrop
(So they run it through a filter)
And it comes out from a faucet
(And is poured into a teapot)
Which is just about to bubble
Now think about your troubles

Just Britney, out and about. Again. But I posted this to ask this; what's with the bad British accent she's been trotting out lately? Seriously, no, Britney. Just. No.

That said, now I think there needs to be a moratorium on Britney Spears. Maybe if the press and paps stop this stupidity and just leave her be, she'll find that she's not getting the attention she craves (and I do think she equates it with love, honestly... she's a sad woman) and decide to get herself some much needed help.

So... moratorium in 5..4..3..2..

Every time I see her or hear something about her, this song automatically pops into my head for some reason:

You're the kind of person
You meet at certain dismal dull affairs.
Center of a crowd, talking much too loud
Running up and down the stairs.
Well, it seems to me that you have seen too much in too few years.
And though you've tried you just can't hide
Your eyes are edged with tears.

You better stop
Look around
Here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes
Here comes your nineteenth nervous breakdown.

When you were a child
You were treated kind
But you were never brought up right.
You were always spoiled with a thousand toys
But still you cried all night.
Your mother who neglected you
Owes a million dollars tax.
And your father's still perfecting ways of making sealing wax.

You better stop, look around
Here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes
Here comes your nineteenth nervous breakdown.

Oh, who's to blame, that girl's just insane.
Well nothing I do don't seem to work,
It only seems to make matters worse. Oh please.

You were still in school
When you had that fool
Who really messed your mind.
And after that you turned your back
On treating people kind.
On our first trip
I tried so hard to rearrange your mind.
But after while I realized you were disarranging mine.

You better stop, look around
Here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes
Here comes your nineteenth nervous breakdown.
Here comes your nineteenth nervous breakdown
Here comes your nineteenth nervous breakdown

New, name, new direction. :)

Tuesday Tunes @ The Music Memoirs

~ How important are the lyrics to you when it comes to a song.

It goes both ways for me. There are songs I love that have lyrics that don't make any sense but I adore the music. Then there are songs I didn't really love UNTIL I really listened to the words. Ultimately however, I will have to say it's the music, the SOUND of the song that grabs me first, then the lyrics.

~ Tell us some lyrical wisdom.

"Everybody's talking and no one says a word
Everybody's making love and no one really cares
There's Nazis in the bathroom just below the stairs
Always something happening and nothing going on
There's always something cooking and nothing in the pot
They're starving back in China so finish what you got"

Nobody Told Me - John Lennon

I just finished listening to this one, so it's in my head. LOL!

~ Who writes the best lyrics and why?

John Lennon. Simply because of the sheer impact and resonance of his words.

Bob Dylan. Purely because of his influence. He brought real depth to rock lyrics.

Paul Simon. Because he's literate and poetic.

Joni Mitchell. Rich lyrics that are personal, and create an indelible mood.

Yes there are more, definitely. I look forward to reading the answers and seeing what the rest of you think.
hippie_chick: (earphones / nietzsche quote)
A post to a forum I frequent got me thinking about some of the greatest opening lyrics of rock songs because someone posted Spinner's list. I have to say Spinner sucks with lists quite a bit, so I have to expound upon this. Here are a few that I can add that you really can't forget once you hear 'em:

"I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand walking through the streets of Soho in the rain. He was looking for the place called Lee Ho Fook's, going to get a big dish of beef chow mein."
- Warren Zevon, Werewolves of London. And yes, this one ends up on most greatest opening lyrics of rock lists, for it is that great. XD

"When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school, it's a wonder I can think at all."
- Paul Simon, Kodachrome. And how true is that?! Love this song.

"I read the news today, oh boy."
- The Beatles, A Day In the Life. What more needs to be said?

"Johnny's in the basement
mixing up the medicine.
I'm on the pavement
thinking about the government.
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says he's got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off..."
- Bob Dylan, Subterranean Homesick Blues. Bow down to the great Zimmerman.

"Hey little girl is your daddy home? Did he go away and leave you all alone?
I got a bad desire...I'm on fire."
- Bruce Springsteen, I'm On Fire. One of only a few songs by the Boss that I really love.

"Sitting on a park bench eyeing little girls with bad intent. Snot running down his nose, greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes."
- Jethro Tull - Aqualung

"If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?"
- Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird. This song makes me cry.

"You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht.
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye, your scarf it was apricot."
- Carly Simon, You're So Vain. Still don't to this day know just who this song is about.

"You're breakin' my heart, you're tearin' it apart. So fuck you!!"
- Harry Nilsson, You're Breakin' My Heart. I just love singing along with this one.

"Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste. I've been around for a long, long year, stole many a man's soul and faith. And I was around when Jesus Christ had his moment of doubt and pain. Made damn sure that Pilate washed his hands and sealed his fate."
- The Rolling Stones, Sympathy For The Devil. Pleased to meet you, hope you guess my name.

Anyway, enough of that. I could go on. In fact, [livejournal.com profile] elfslut? Feel free to steal this for the meme if you want.

This one was fun! Go to YouTube and plug in your birth year then post a video. My choice was a 1965 performance of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me, Babe" by Joan Baez. I love her version of this!

[Error: unknown template video]

This song was covered a few times. Most notably by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, as well as The Turtles. Here's a video of their version, which I like as well:

[Error: unknown template video]

And the lyrics:

Go 'way from my window,
Leave at your own chosen speed.
I'm not the one you want, babe,
I'm not the one you need.
You say you're lookin' for someone
Never weak but always strong,
To protect you an' defend you
Whether you are right or wrong,
Someone to open each and every door,
But it ain't me, babe,
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe,
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.

Go lightly from the ledge, babe,
Go lightly on the ground.
I'm not the one you want, babe,
I will only let you down.
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who will promise never to part,
Someone to close his eyes for you,
Someone to close his heart,
Someone who will die for you an' more,
But it ain't me, babe,
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe,
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.

Go melt back into the night, babe,
Everything inside is made of stone.
There's nothing in here moving
An' anyway I'm not alone.
You say you're looking for someone
Who'll pick you up each time you fall,
To gather flowers constantly
An' to come each time you call,
A lover for your life an' nothing more,
But it ain't me, babe,
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe,
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.

Fanny (Be Tender With My Love) <-- click for download

First I rise, then I fall
seems like you don't want the love of this man at all.
And it's sure been a lonely time
right up to the time I met you.
So if you take a love like mine...

Be tender with my love
you know how easy it is to hurt me.
Fanny, be tender with my love
'cause it's all that I've got
and my love won't desert me...

So you say to yourself,
boy you're out of your brain.
Do you think I'm gonna stand here all night in the rain?
And it's the start of a love affair
the moment when I first met you.
And if you want I'll take you there...

Be tender with my love
you know how easy it is to break me
Fanny, be tender with my love
'cause it's all that I've got
and my love won't forsake me...

With my love...
Our love will seal it together.
Oh, with our love...
You made a promise you'll always love me forever...

Be tender with my love
you know how easy it is to break me
Fanny, be tender with my love
'cause it's all that I've got And my love won't forsake me...

I've been hearing this one at work a lot lately. Got me back on an early (actually pre- SNF) Bee Gees kick. The album this song comes from, Main Course , released in 1975, was their 11th and the first in which Barry would bust out that falsetto. It had a more R&B feel to it than prior outings as well. Not lacking in those famous, tight harmonies that these brothers made their name perfecting.

"Jive Talkin'" and "Nights on Broadway" are also on this one. And I love, love, love "Wind of Change". But "Fanny" is one I always thought was so sweet and I always have to stop and listen when it comes on.

Listening right now. And I thought I'd share this little nugget with you.
hippie_chick: (Beatles / Hey Jude)

You can worry your life away with
Not knowing what each new day may bring to you
Or take each day as it goes on
Wake up to the love that flows on, around you.

If you believe - if you believe in you
Everything you thought is possible, if you believe . . .
If you believe in me . . .
All your love's reflected back to you
When you believe.

Too many troubles you can't control
To get you falling into the holes they dig for you
Get up - you have all your needs; Pray
Give up - and it all recedes away from you.
If you believe - if you believe in you

Everything you thought is possible, if you believe . . .
If you believe in me . . .
All your love's reflected back to you
When you believe.

I have no idea why this wouldn't be one of his top played songs. ♥

Blow Away - George Harrison

Day turned black, sky ripped apart
Rained for a year 'til it dampened my heart
Cracks and leaks
The floorboards caught rot
About to go down
I had almost forgot.

All I got to do is to love you
All I got to be is, be happy
All it's got to take is some warmth to make it
Blow Away, Blow Away, Blow Away.

Sky cleared up, day turned to bright
Closing both eyes now the head filled with light
Hard to remember what a state I was in
Instant amnesia
Yang to the Yin.

All I got to do is to love you
All I got to be is, be happy
All it's got to take is some warmth to make it
Blow Away, Blow Away, Blow Away.

Wind blew in, cloud was dispersed
Rainbows appearing, the pressures were burst
Breezes a-singing, now feeling good
The moment had passed
Like I knew that it should.

All I got to do is to love you
All I got to be is, be happy
All it's got to take is some warmth to make it
Blow Away, Blow Away, Blow Away.

This video is all kinds of awesome. "Pink, it's like red but not quite." ♥ Steven!!

And Centaur!Joe Perry... HAWT.

Pink - Aerosmith
Pink it's my new obsession
Pink it's not even a question,
Pink on the lips of your lover, 'cause
Pink is the love you discover

Pink as the bing on your cherry
Pink 'cause you are so very
Pink it's the color of passion
'Cause today it just goes with the fashion

Pink it was love at first sight
Pink when I turn out the light, and
Pink gets me high as a kite
And I think everything is going to be all right
No matter what we do tonight

You could be my flamingo
'Coz pink is the new kinda lingo
Pink like a deco umbrella
It's kink - but you don't ever tell her

Pink it was love at first sight, and
Pink when I turn out the light
Pink gets me high as a kite
And I think everything is going to be all right
No matter what we do tonight

I want to be your lover
I wanna wrap you in rubber
As pink as the sheets that we lay on
Pink it's my favorite crayon, yeah

Pink it was love at first sight
Pink when I turn out the light
Pink it's like red but not quite
And I think everything is going to be all right
No matter what we do tonight

Just beautifully done, a great selection of Van Gogh's work. And the song... the song always makes me feel so melancholy.

Vincent - by Don McLean

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as
beautiful as you

Starry, starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget
Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will

Lazy Sunday

Jun. 5th, 2005 03:54 pm
hippie_chick: (Default)
Just spending a lazy Sunday indoors puttering around on the computer. It's hazy and overcast outside and earlier it was raining like crazy so it's definitely a good day to play inside.

In my travels, I found the video to Ringo Starr's song "Never Without You". Ringo wrote this as a tribute to George. **sigh** My friends and I teared up when he sang this in concert last year. It's lovely.

Never Without You (video)

We were young, it was fun
And we couldn't lose
Times were right, overnight
We were headline news
Crazy days and reckless nights
Limousines and bright spotlights
We were brothers through it all

And your song will play on without you
And this world won't forget about you
Every part of you was in your song
Now we will carry on... Never Without you
(Without you Without You) Within you without you
Here comes the song it's about you

Here today, not alone
With my memories
Life is strange how things change
It's reality
You played a beautiful melody
That keeps on haunting me
I can always feel you by my side

And your song will play on without you
And this world won't forget about you
Every part of you was in your song
Now we will carry on... Never Without you
(Never Without You) Within you without you
(Within you without you)
Here comes the song it's about you

I know all things must pass
And only love will last
I'll always love the memory of you and me
Take it away Eric

And your song will play on without you
And this world won't forget about you
Every part of you was in your song
Now we will carry on...Never Without you
(Never Without You)Within you without you
(Within you without you)
I think that love is about you

Went into the store for a couple of hours this morning. We're closing at 11 and I'm headed over to my aunt's or as it's come to be known since Hurricane Frances "The Heavner Hilton". Heh heh.

Right now, it's gray, getting a bit breezier, and starting to rain. The weather will only be deteriorating more from here. Still have power, hopefully we won't lose it this time, but the central area of the storm is hitting Boca closer than Frances did. The good thing though, is that we have a northward facing apartment, and the winds are going NW/NE, so that's less pressure on them. We have no protection on the sliding door other than tarp. We are installing shutters here but have to wait until after the season is over. Our building is older but built very well... other than they didn't put storm shutters in like the newer condos on the oceanfront. We should be okay though. ::knocks wood::
PLUS, our air conditioner went on the fritz yesterday and won't be fixed until Monday depending on what this storm does to Boca etc.. so I had a very warm night's sleep last night. ::sweats::

Gonna go get the kitty cats taken care of. They are a little upset, sense something going on. And I have a couple little quick things to do before we leave. Florida friends, good luck and stay safe. The rest of you I hope to be back online quickly after the storm. I leave you with a song I've been playing alot the past few weeks.

Trying To Reason With Hurricane Season - Jimmy Buffett

Squalls out on the gulf stream,
Big storms coming soon.
I passed out in my hammock,

God, I slept way past noon.
Stood up and tried to focus,
I hoped I wouldn't have to look far.
I knew I could use a Bloody Mary,
So I stumbled next door to the bar.

[Chorus:]
And now I must confess,
I could use some rest.
I can't run at this pace very long.
Yes, it's quite insane,
I think it hurts my brain.
But it cleans me out and then I can go on.

There's something about this Sunday
It's a most peculiar gray
Strolling down the avenue
That's known as A1A
I was feeling tired, then I got inspired.
And I knew that it wouldn't last long
So all alone I walked back home, sat on my beach
And then I made up this song.

[Chorus]

Well, the wind is blowin' harder now
Fifty knots of there abouts,
There's white caps on the ocean.
And I'm watching for water spouts
It's time to close the shutters
It's time to go inside.
In a week I'll be in gay Paris;
That's a mighty long airplane ride.

[Chorus]
Yes, It cleans me out and then I can go on.

P.S. I like the new format in the update journal area. Nice!

Remembering on this solemn day.

You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good bye.
Teach your children well,
Their fathers' hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they pick's, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.
And you, of tender years,
Can't know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.
Teach your parents well,
Their children's hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they pick's, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

This song kicks my ass into next Sunday.

Sad But True

Hey
I’m your life
I’m the one who takes you there
Hey
I’m your life
I’m the one who cares
They
They betray
I’m your only true friend now
They
They’ll betray
I’m forever there

I’m your dream, make you real
I’m your eyes when you must steal
I’m your pain when you can’t feel
Sad but true

I’m your dream, mind astray
I’m your eyes while you’re away
I’m your pain while you repay
You know it’s sad but true

You
You’re my mask
You’re my cover, my shelter
You
You’re my mask
You’re the one who’s blamed
Do
Do my work
Do my dirty work, scapegoat
Do
Do my deeds
For you’re the one who’s shamed

I’m your dream, make you real
I’m your eyes when you must steal
I’m your pain when you can’t feel
Sad but true

I’m your dream, mind astray
I’m your eyes while you’re away
I’m your pain while you repay
You know it’s sad but true

Hate
I’m your hate
I’m your hate when you want love
Pay
Pay the price
Pay, for nothing’s fair

Hey
I’m your life
I’m the one who took you here
Hey
I’m your life
And I no longer care

I’m your dream, make you real
I’m your eyes when you must steal
I’m your pain when you can’t feel
Sad but true

I’m your truth, telling lies
I’m your reasoned alibis
I’m inside open your eyes
I’m you

Sad but true
