Top Five on Friday @ The Music Memoirs

Top 5 song lyrics....(And tell us why you like them)

You can't beat a well written song. Good lyrics turn me on. As you'll see by their multiple entries I do have my favorite lyricists. Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, Taupin, Dylan, Simon...gifted and completely brilliant. I chose these because of the images and feelings they invoke, and just because of the fact that they are wonderful. Nothing more, nothing less.

1. Across The Universe - The Beatles
(Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup,
They slither while they pass, they slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my open mind,
Possessing and caressing me.
Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world,
Nothing's gonna change my world...)

Just that "pools of sorrow waves of joy" line is complete brilliance. LOVE.

2. Someone To Watch Over Me - George Gershwin (sung by many)

(There’s a saying old says that love is blind
Still we’re often told, seek and ye shall find
So I’m going to seek a certain lad I’ve had in mind
Looking everywhere, haven’t found him yet...)

George and Ira Gershwin are a national treasure. Beautiful. And don't forget "Summertime" ! It gives me goosebumps. I have a WONDERFUL version of that song by Peter Gabriel that I adore.

3. The Dangling Conversation - Simon and Garfunkel

(It’s a still life water color,
Of a now late afternoon,
As the sun shines through the curtained lace
And shadows wash the room...)

4. The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel

(I am just a poor boy and my story’s seldom told
I’ve squandered my resistance for a pocketful of mumbles, such are promises
All lies and jest, still the man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest, hmmmm...)

Yes, two in a row, but Simon is an incredible lyricist.

5. The Wind Cries Mary - Jimi Hendrix

(After all the jacks are in their boxes
And the clowns have all gone to bed
You can hear happiness staggering on down the street
Footsteps dressed in red
And the wind whispers Mary ...)

Just in case you should doubt that Hendrix could do more than just be a guitar virtuoso.

And honorable mentions:

All You Need Is Love - The Beatles
All you need is love, love is all you need. Purely and simply, what more needs to be said?

Honesty - Billy Joel

(If you search for tenderness
It isn’t hard to find
You can have the love you need to live
But if you look for truthfulness
You might just as well be blind
It always seems to be so hard to give...)

The words just resonate. So true, sadly.

The One - Elton John

(I saw you dancing out the ocean
Running fast along the sand
A spirit born of earth and water
Fire flying from your hands

In the instant that you love someone
In the second that the hammer hits
Reality runs up your spine
And the pieces finally fit...)

Bernie Taupin writes some wonderful lyrics!

Julia - John Lennon

(Half of what I say is meaningless
But I say it just to reach you
Julia...)

Gorgeous. Just a beautiful song. Plaintive, wistful.

Positively 4th Street - Bob Dylan

(You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down
You just stood there grinning...)

He's a poet. I don't need to tell you how brilliant he is.

You Wreck Me - Tom Petty

(Tonight we ride, right or wrong
Tonight we sail, on a radio song
Rescue me, should I go down
If I stay too long in trouble town...)

I love the "Wildflowers" CD and this as well as the title track are my two favorites.

Crackerbox Palace - George Harrison

(I was so young when I was born
My eyes could not yet see
And by the time of my first dawn
Somebody holding me...)

I miss George. :(

My Back Pages - Bob Dylan

(Crimson flames tied through my ears
Rollin’ high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
Using ideas as my maps
We’ll meet on edges, soon, said i...)

Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney

(Maybe I’m amazed at the way you love me all the time
Maybe I’m afraid of the way I love you
Maybe I’m amazed at the the way you pulled me out of time
Hung me on a line
Maybe I’m amazed at the way I really need you...)

This song is my parent's song... so it has a little more personal meaning to me.

I could go on, but I digress.

Wow! The moon is just rising, it's just about full and it's this beautiful pink-gold. There was a fabulous sunset tonight, too. ♥
