The best opening lines in rock music.
Aug. 23rd, 2007 02:04 pmA post to a forum I frequent got me thinking about some of the greatest opening lyrics of rock songs because someone posted Spinner's list. I have to say Spinner sucks with lists quite a bit, so I have to expound upon this. Here are a few that I can add that you really can't forget once you hear 'em:
"I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand walking through the streets of Soho in the rain. He was looking for the place called Lee Ho Fook's, going to get a big dish of beef chow mein."
- Warren Zevon, Werewolves of London. And yes, this one ends up on most greatest opening lyrics of rock lists, for it is that great. XD
"When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school, it's a wonder I can think at all."
- Paul Simon, Kodachrome. And how true is that?! Love this song.
"I read the news today, oh boy."
- The Beatles, A Day In the Life. What more needs to be said?
"Johnny's in the basement
mixing up the medicine.
I'm on the pavement
thinking about the government.
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says he's got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off..."
- Bob Dylan, Subterranean Homesick Blues. Bow down to the great Zimmerman.
"Hey little girl is your daddy home? Did he go away and leave you all alone?
I got a bad desire...I'm on fire."
- Bruce Springsteen, I'm On Fire. One of only a few songs by the Boss that I really love.
"Sitting on a park bench eyeing little girls with bad intent. Snot running down his nose, greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes."
- Jethro Tull - Aqualung
"If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?"
- Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird. This song makes me cry.
"You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht.
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye, your scarf it was apricot."
- Carly Simon, You're So Vain. Still don't to this day know just who this song is about.
"You're breakin' my heart, you're tearin' it apart. So fuck you!!"
- Harry Nilsson, You're Breakin' My Heart. I just love singing along with this one.
"Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste. I've been around for a long, long year, stole many a man's soul and faith. And I was around when Jesus Christ had his moment of doubt and pain. Made damn sure that Pilate washed his hands and sealed his fate."
- The Rolling Stones, Sympathy For The Devil. Pleased to meet you, hope you guess my name.
Anyway, enough of that. I could go on. In fact,
elfslut? Feel free to steal this for the meme if you want.
