Tuesday music meme time....
Dec. 16th, 2008 08:03 amTuesday Tunes @ The Music Memoirs
Word association, holiday style! Maybe not every one of these will be holiday tunes, but the idea is what comes to mind first, so... Here we go.
Holly: The Holly and the Ivy (traditional)
The holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown. Of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears the crown.
Tree: O Tannenbaum (traditional)
My German ancestry showing. I just looked it up on Wikipedia and had no idea that the Nazis promoted this song to remove the more Christian parts of the holiday. Wow! There were a couple versions written, but this one is the one I know best and have always sung.
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
Wie treu sind deine Blätter!
Du grünst nicht nur zur Sommerzeit,
Nein auch im Winter, wenn es schneit.
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
Wie treu sind deine Blätter!
Hug: Hold Me Tight - The Beatles
Not a holiday choice but a pleasant early Beatles tune that came to mind... hug/hold...
It feels so right now, hold me tight.
Tell me I'm the only one, and then I might never be the lonely one.
So hold me tight tonight, tonight. It's you, you, you, you.
Ice: River - Joni Mitchell
I wish I had a river I could skate away on...
Give: Pretty Paper - Roy Orbison
Pretty paper, pretty ribbons of blue, wrap your presents to your darling from you.
Pretty pencils to write “I love you”. Pretty paper, pretty ribbons of blue.
Take: Santa Baby - Eartha Kitt
She has a tall order for old Santa. I mean a diamond ring, a car, a yacht, a duplex... *nods*
Think of all the fun I've missed, think of all the fellas that I haven't kissed.
Next year I could be just as good if you'll check off my Christmas list...
Try: Try Me - James Brown and the Famous Flames
Try me, try me. Darlin' tell me I need you. Try me, try me and your love will always be true. Oh I need you (I need you)
Drink: Little Ol' Wine Drinker Me - Dean Martin (among others but I love Dino)
Dean's the patron saint, I'd say. And mmmmmm.... wine.
I've asked the man behind the bar for the jukebox and the music takes me back to Tennessee
When they ask who's the fool in the corner cryin', I say, little ole wine drinker me. I say, little ole wine drinker me.
*Note: The video linked is really Dean singing, not Elvis! NOT. ELVIS.
Party: Step Into Christmas - Elton John
Always makes me feel jolly and Christmas party-like.
Step into Christmas, let's join together. We can watch the snow fall forever and ever.
Eat, drink and be merry, come along with me,
Step into Christmas, the admission's free.
Rest: God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen (traditional)
I have always loved this one.
God rest ye merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay.
Remember Christ our Savior was born on Christmas Day;
to save us all from Satan’s power when we were gone astray.
O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy;
O tidings of comfort and joy.
