Oscar movie watchin' time...
Jan. 20th, 2009 09:13 amNominations for the 81st Annual Academy Awards will be announced on Thursday, the 22nd, but based on buzz and talk, I've been trying to get some movie watching in before the telecast. So far I've seen:
Slumdog Millionaire - It was simply wonderful and I recommend it... go see it before the Oscars and because it's the most talked about film of the moment.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Brad Pitt was fantastic in this and I adore Cate Blanchett too. I think Brad works well with David Fincher directing him (see also Se7en and Fight Club) and his chemistry with Blanchett was excellent.
Revolutionary Road - I love Kate and Leo together. It can get quite heavy handed for some, but I liked it well enough. Just to watch these two onscreen is worth it.
Gosh I need to get a step on. Need (want) to see:
The Reader - I ♥ Kate Winslet. I will watch her in anything and was so pleased she won two awards at the Globes!
Milk - Sean Penn is brilliant and I love watching him onscreen. I've read glowing reviews. This is likely to be one of the top nominations along with Slumdog so I need to see this one.
The Wrestler - Hearing good things about this film and Mickey Rourke's performance, for which he won a Golden Globe. I think he's an excellent actor anyway, so I am intrigued.
Doubt - For my girl Meryl and my love for Philip Seymour Hoffman. It's likely to get plenty of nods, as best picture and acting for Meryl and Phil as well as Amy Adams.
Has anyone seen Seven Pounds? I heard from one friend and she really was mixed about it. Gabriele Muccino and Will Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness) team again here. I loved "Pursuit" so I'm interested to hear more about this one. What were your thoughts if you saw it?
I've seen clips of these, but that's not the same as watching the piece in entirety of course. What I did get a taste of though tells me that this year's Oscar race will be a good one. There's lots out there right now for movie lovers to chew on!
