Top Five on Friday @ The Music Memoirs

Top 5 Traditional Christmas Carols and tell us why you like the particular song.

There are a few, hard to narrow down a top five. But these would do it every time.

1. O Holy Night.
Has always been a favorite, because of its power and beauty. Fall on your knees! Oh hear the angel voices! Oh night, oh night divine! Oh night when Christ was born...
VIDEO - Kings College Choir of Cambridge. Because this you need to hear sung by a choir.

2. O Little Town of Bethlehem
Soft and quiet. I imagine the stillness of the place. I've loved this one since I was a child.
VIDEO - Sung by Nat King Cole, one of my favorite voices to hear at Christmas.

3. In The Bleak Midwinter
Just so beautiful and it touches my heart when I hear it.

In the bleak midwinter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter,
Long ago.

4. Coventry Carol
Oldest song, it's said, extant in the English language. Speaks of the Massacre of Innocents, the ordered slaying of the firstborn of every household by King Herod as told in Matthew. But its haunting lament, a mother for her doomed child, always stuck with me and gives me chills every time I hear it.
VIDEO - sung by the King's College Choir of Cambridge.

5. Silent Night.
Just still so beautiful to me, when sung in a hushed, lullaby like way. It just *is* Christmas to me.
VIDEO - Sung in the original German by the Innsbrucker Capellknaben. And by Andy Williams, another of my favorite voices to hear at Christmas. And well what do you know, brief introduction by Donny Osmond there! *wink*

Tuesday Tunes @ The Music Memoirs

Word Association, winter holiday style!

snowflake: Here Comes Suzy Snowflake

Here comes Suzy Snowflake,
look at her tumblin' down!
Bringing joy to every girl and boy
Suzy's come to town.

bitter: We Three Kings Of Orient Are

Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom. Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in a stone cold tomb.

cold: Baby, It's Cold Outside

I really can't stay (Baby it's cold outside!)
I've got to go away (Baby it's cold outside!)
This evening has been (Been hoping that you'd drop in.)
So very nice (I'll hold your hands, they're just like ice.)
My mother will start to worry (Beautiful, what's your hurry?)
My father will be pacing the floor (Listen to the fireplace roar!)
So really I'd better scurry (Beautiful, please don't hurry.)
Well maybe just a half a drink more (Put some music on while I pour...)

Okay maybe just ONE more drink. *wink*

snuggle: Anything on Jackie Gleason's Christmas albums will do here.
They make me want to snuggle warm in front of the fire watching the snow fall when I hear them.
Christmas In Paris

kind: Good King Wenceslas

I've always loved this one about a kind hearted king who gives alms to a poor man.

In his master's steps he trod
Where the snow lay dinted
Heat was in the very sod
Which the Saint had printed
Therefore, Christian men, be sure
Wealth or rank possessing
Ye who now will bless the poor
Shall yourselves find blessing

tree: O Christmas Tree (O Tannenbaum)

O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum,
wie treu sind deine Blätter!
Du grünst nicht nur zur Sommerzeit,
Nein auch im Winter, wenn es schneit.
O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum,
wie treu sind deine Blätter!

dark: George Winston - Night Part II (Midnight)

I love this CD, gorgeous piano mood music for the entire month of December.
There isn't any video that's usable here, but if you go to Amazon, you can hear samples and maybe buy this beautiful CD for yourself.

long: Twelve Days of Christmas

Because yes, that's a pretty long song. :)

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me....

candy: Hard Candy Christmas (from "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas")

Fine and Dandy
Lord it's like a hard candy christmas
I'm barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won't let
Sorrow bring me way down

special: Well, there are so many *songs* sung about the birth of Jesus Christ, which is what makes Christmas so special, right? But here it is, straight from the Holy Bible. Linus Van Pelt explains what Christmas is really all about in "A Charlie Brown Christmas"

Luke 2: 8-14 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
