hippie_chick: (earphones / nietzsche quote)
This time, though, I'm going to take a cue from another friend and write a couple of personal lines about the song instead of lyric clips. I'm in an 80s mood, I guess. For the first four years of the decade (Freshman year started late 1979, graduated 1983) I was in high school so most likely you'll see those memories associated. Let's go-

Pandora: on.

01. the go-go's // our lips are sealed (1981)
Sophomore year. Just one of those radio songs that blended in with everything else in the halls and hanging out with friends. Remember seeing the Go-Go's videos and thinking those chicks were so cool.

02. 99 red balloons // nena (1984)
No real associations here, but I will say I liked the German "99 Luftballons (Neunundneunzig Luftballons)" better, and yes, I can sing it in the German.

03. men without hats // the safety dance (1983)
This song is from early in my senior year. Memories of the video on MTV more than anything. Another of those radio songs that were just part of the background at the time.

04. eddie money // take me home tonight (1986)
No real associations with this one other than hearing it on the radio tons. I remember liking Ronnie Spector popping in there... his "just like Ronnie said..." then her "be my little baby..."

05. starship // nothing's gonna stop us now (1987)
This is what Jefferson Airplane / Jefferson Starship turned into in the 80s... a pop group churning out stuff like this and "We Built This City". This one reminds me of the movie Mannequin mostly.

06. martika // toy soldiers (1989)
Martika wrote this one about a friend who was wrapped up in cocaine addiction. She has some of her former Kids Incorporated castmates singing choruses with her, including Stacy (Fergie) Ferguson. Jennifer Love Hewitt (later KI member) is also in the choruses. This one doesn't really have any associations with me, one of those radio things once again and would play often, as I was working in a little gift shop that I loved called The Paper Tree. This was also a favorite year in the decade for music in my mind though I do remember.

07. the go-go's // head over heels (1984)
More Go-Go's. They were heavily entwined in 80s music for me. I listened to the radio a great deal back then, and remember this one just being one of those bops that I'd sing along with when it would come on. I think this ended up on one of my cassette tapes I'd do off the radio of songs I liked. I might still have a couple of those hanging around here as a matter of fact.

08. a-ha // take on me (1985)
This was the year we moved from Indiana to Florida. My family remains here today. This song was everywhere. It was a favorite, and I most strongly remember that video! Singing along with the radio "I'll beeee gone in a day or twooooooo!".

09. kim wilde // you keep me hangin' on (1986)
Yet another cover of the Diana Ross and the Supremes hit. My fave cover belongs to Vanilla Fudge, but this one was good, remember it playing a lot.

10. irene cara // flashdance... what a feeling (1983)
OMG this song and this movie. My senior year. I was obsessed with this soundtrack. OBSESSED I TELL YOU. It started off with me buying it on cassette, and today resides in my digital music collection. A little aside: I was supposed to see Irene Cara as Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar back a few years ago now, and she ended up sick and not performing. Also I may or may not have ripped up a couple of sweatshirts because of this film.

EDIT! LOL now it starts playing some really cool stuff. I've been singing along like crazy over here. Ah well... I'll do this one again soon.
