Okay so it would appear that the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy of books (or is it just the first one?) is the fastest selling paper back of all time. Even beat out Harry Potter! Though, to be fair most HP fans bought the hard back editions the second they came out so yeah. *shrug*

The last time I wrote about these books, libraries in Brevard County here in Florida had banned them due to the content. I understand that ban has since been lifted. Anyway, I'm just still not understanding why this is being lapped up like a kitten to a dish of milk? I started the first book and it was so bad. It read like a bad Harlequin Romance novel.

People are acting like erotica never existed before, like this is some huge epiphany! Ladies, get out there and find some decent erotica to read! I'm also hearing that Mark Wahlberg is pretty much securing the movie rights? MOVIE? Oh no, please spare us all. But I'm sure the theaters will fill up nonetheless. *eyeroll*

As an amusing aside, since this was based off a Twilight inspired fanfic: Kristen Stewart was spotted reading 50 Shades. *nods*

I read them as well and they were not good...the character development of the lead was OK at best and I did finish them just to see. I found them unrealistic and not at all believable once I got to the end.
This was based off of a fanfic? Really?
I heard about the movie and groaned out loud.

Yep called Master of the Universe. The book's basically plagiarized from it. :/

I have them but haven't read them. I did listen to that youtube video of Gilbert Gottfried reading some of it. It's pretty smutty, that's for sure! Is it the sado-masochism that's striking a note do you think? (My spell checker isn't recognizing sado-masochism. Huh.)

Probably... that element feels "naughty" and "dangerous" to these folks I guess. There again though, there's better if they want to read something in that area.

I totally agree. It's pretty tame (and lame) bdsm (from the little I've heard, and I hate judging by that small amount, but that small bit was SO bad, I just can't bring myself to read the whole thing to make a more informed judgement.)

That makes me so sad. I write fanfiction. :( The original story is probably better than the stupid books!!!

That was so funny!! The radio show I listen to was reading parts of it too and I was cringing as a writer!! Well, laughing and cringing.

I read a paragraph that someone published online and it was enough for me to see that the writing style itself doesn't suit me.
Furthermore, I've heard that it deals with BDSM and I can totally believe you when you say it reads like a harlequin novel - a badly written one.
The fact that it's originally a Twilight fanfiction hardly makes it any better..

I'm aware of all the hype, but have no clue what the supposed "erotica" in these is supposed to be. Is it bondage?

I have not read them, but I downloaded a free copy. After I heard it was based on fanfiction, I was curious. It does upset me about the reputation and it being fanfiction because I read and write it. Not all fanficiton is badly written and this only gives it a bad name.

Oh, my gawd.

On the train ride home the other night, my friend [livejournal.com profile] no_bald_monkeys and I decided to read the Kindle sample of "50 Shades..." that I'd had sitting around.

It. Was. Terrible.

I don't even know how many pages it was, but we counted nearly a dozen uses of the phrase "a ghost of a smile" in that one chapter alone (much like "chagrin" in Twilight, I suppose?), and the guy's eyes "flared," "blazed," "burned," and lord knows what other flammable sorts of things...and THERE WAS NO SEX. No foreplay, even! NOTHING HOT AT ALL. It was boooorrrrring. If Amazon thought that sample would tempt anyone who hasn't already fallen prey, they're sadly misinformed. We did laugh a lot for our hour-long commute, at least. :D

That's the impression I got from the Kindle sample I read, yeah. It got as far as the lead guy showing up at the hardware store where the supposed heroine (??) works, and he gets her to help him pick out types of ropes to buy and such. If you can read the sample online at Amazon, do it; it'll make you 100% sure you won't want to read the rest!

I don't write fic myself, but I couldn't agree more with you. This supposed Twi-book reeks of Secretary (right down to the boss being named Mr. Grey!), and the fanfic I've read from THAT has been a thousand times better than this drivel. Ugh. I have a lot of friends who are big fanfic writers, and every one of them has more talent than whatever this...thing...involves. Anyone unfamiliar with fanfic before now is going to think it's all dreck if they base their opinions on 50 Shades. Plus: It saddens me that this woman is rich and my friends aren't.

Agree! My friends have better style and talent in their writing than this stuff, and they aren't raking in the dough like this lady is? It kinda pisses me off and saddens me.

I dabble in writing, but I'm not very good, myself. I just do it for fun, and hopefully the more I do it the better I get / more I learn.

It really did remind me of a badly written Harlequin novel. Good for a little laugh, but really. Bad. LOL

Just what I was thinking. Exactly how do they plan to do this without it being straight out BDSM porn. And Mark Wahlberg is said to be securing the movie rights, I'm not sure if he's planning on playing Grey or not.
