The Random 10 @ The Music Memoirs
Actually had a couple CDs playing over the weekend. Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath, Poison's Greatest Hits, and Lennon Legend. I guess the randomosity from this weekend comes from those...
1. Instant Karma! - John Lennon. Just a great pop oriented track.
Why in the world are we here
Surely not to live in pain and fear
Why on earth are you there
When you’re everywhere
Come and get your share.
We all shine on, like the moon and the stars and the sun...
2. Every Rose Has It's Thorn - Poison. As power ballads go, this one is one of my top favorites.
3. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath. Starts with a thunderstorm and church bells. Gloomy, dark and black. Chilling vocals from Ozzy here!
4. Mind Games - John Lennon. Just gorgeously crafted, this one.
5. Your Mama Don't Dance - Poison. A remake of an old Loggins and Messina song, but when Poison does it, it rocks a thousand times harder and makes you want to put it out there on the floor and move.
6. Wicked World - Black Sabbath. Just the lyrics. Relevant even now.
The world today is such a wicked thing
Fighting going on between the human race
People give good wishes to all their friends
While people just across the sea are counting the dead
A politician’s job they say is very high
For he has to choose who’s got to go and die
They can put a man on the moon quite easy
While people here on earth are dying of old diseases
A woman goes to work every day after day
She just goes to work just to earn her pay
Child sitting crying by a life that’s harder
He doesn’t even know who is his father
7. Stand By Me - John Lennon. I have just always loved John's version of this Ben E. King classic. His voice is amazing on this one I think.
8. Unskinny Bop - Poison. Just a great danceable rocker. I always used to play this one when I was working night shift at the record store and it always energized me. Raunchy and fun. Let me say something about Poison here. No they weren't the GREATEST band, not really, but they had some excellent singles back then. I recommend this CD if you just want the best of them all on one disc.
9. Woman - John Lennon. I always thought this the sweetest song. This one coming from the man that mocked McCartney for "Silly Love Songs"! Haha! But this is lovely, whereas "Silly Love Songs" is rather um... I dunno... saccharine.
10. Whatever Gets You Thru The Night - John Lennon. His first solo #1 in the U.S. If you remember, John had made a deal with Elton John that if this song hit number one in the States, he'd come onstage and play during Elton's Madison Square Garden gig. It did and John appeared, to perform this song and "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" with Elton. Easy going, danceable track, telling us "whatever gets you thru the night, s'alright."
And instead of one random picture you get three, in honor of my three highlighted artists here. I just loved the cover of that first Sabbath album. And incidentally it was released on February 13 1970... FRIDAY the 13th. Yeah, fitting I'd say.
