Top Five On Friday @ The Music Memoirs

Top 5 album "killers." You know, songs that ruined an album in one way or another.

Thanks for the topic this week, nat! And I'm late with this one, but better late than never. I also had to give this one a little thought. Haha!

1. "Sometimes It Snows In April" - Prince and the Revolution (Album: "Parade")
Don't get me wrong I like the song alright enough on it's own. Not my favorite, but it's nice. It just feels really out of place on this album.

2. "My Eyes Have Seen You" - The Doors (Album: "Strange Days")
I've always considered this their most mediocre song. It just brings down what is a pretty darned solid album. Too "poppy" to me, with a sound that had previously been done many times before. Not what I'd expect in sound from The Doors.

3. "The Long and Winding Road" - The Beatles (Album: "Let It Be")
I'm okay with Let It Be, really, however it's not coherent enough for me and I don't listen to it as often as others. This song though, at least the version that made it to the original release, is not my favorite. I love the song, just not the over the top orchestration applied to it. I much prefer the "naked" version... the one that appeared on the Anthology with just Paul and the piano basically. Gave the song such impact and would have fit better with the more "stripped down" vibe of "Let It Be". Thankfully this has also been put on the version of "Let It Be" that should have been released originally, "Let It Be: Naked" !

4. "My Girl" - The Rolling Stones (Album: "Flowers")
I love this album. Really I do. It brings my childhood back instantaneously. However, they should have left this one alone. Fine for the Temptations, but not the Stones. It just doesn't fit in there at all, to me seems awkward.

5. "Before It's Too Late" - Donny Osmond (Album: "Eyes Don't Lie")
I'm a big fan of "Eyes". It was edgier and funkier than past Donny Osmond output. But this song is the only thing I'd change about it. There are already three pretty strong ballads on there, "Make It Last Forever", "Private Affair", and "Love Will Survive", the latter being the strongest of them. This one isn't as strong, and it's just one too many ballads.

Earth Day

It's Earth Day, and I'm thinking about the state of our planet today. So many places on this planet are in peril. Here's a list of such places, found when I logged on to MSN this morning. It's in the Travel area, so these are popular tourist destinations. I'll share it with you, it really opened my eyes.

The World's Endangered Destinations

1. Florida.
I live here. We are said to be the most vulnerable spot in the U.S. to the effects of global warming. And that we are the number one on this list? It concerns me greatly.

2. Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska.
Many Alaskan glaciers are rapidly receding.

3. The Great Barrier Reef, Australia.
I'll quote this one from the site:
"One of the most impressive natural habitats in the world, the Great Barrier Reef could be killed by increased water temperatures and the resulting coral bleaching. Australia is particularly vulnerable to global warming because of its large number of fragile ecosystems, uncertain water sources and a high concentration of people living on the coast."

4. The Netherlands.
Could see damaging floods within the next century.

5. Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.
You've heard about "the snows of Kilimanjaro"? They've steadily declined in past years, and it's glaciers could be all but gone by 2020.

6. Funafuti, Tuvalu.
All of the more low lying islands and nations like this one are extremely susceptible to horrific flooding.

7. South Georgia Island, just north of Antarctica.
We have all been made aware about the increased rate with which the poles are warming. It's frightening.

8. Dalian, China.
China is just behind the U.S. in it's consumption and use of fossil fuels and greenhouse gasses emitted into the atmosphere.

9. Venice, Italy.
Rising waters could bring damaging flooding. A floodgate system is being instated, due to open in 2012.

10. Tokyo, Japan.
They had their first winter without snow in 131 years. The warmer climate can spur early bird migration and change other natural cycles.

11. Wengen, Switzerland.
The Swiss Alps could be completely melted by 2050.

12. Manhattan, New York City.
Rising levels could cause catastrophic "megafloods". On the other coast, L.A. is also on the list for this.

13. Halong Bay, Vietnam.
The poorer population here might not have the resources to protect itself from the dangers of climate change.

14. St. Claude Street Bridge, New Orleans.
Still not safe. Another Katrina awaits. Storms are going to just get more intense.

15. London, England.
Storm surges, and extremely high tides. Will the Thames Barrier prove to be enough protection?

16. Northwest Territories, Canada.
Polar bears have been predicted to be extinct within the next century as their habitat changes, and their hunting ground, which is the Arctic sea ice, melts rapidly away.

Just makes me think about things I as one person can do, to do my part to help our earth and slow or prevent any further damage to it.

Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology) - Marvin Gaye <--- listen / download

Oh, mercy mercy me
Oh, things ain't what they used to be
No, no
Where did all the blue sky go?
Poison is the wind that blows
From the north, east, south, and sea
Oh, mercy mercy me
Oh, things ain't what they used to be
No, no
Oil wasted on the oceans and upon our seas
Fish full of mercury
Oh, mercy mercy me
Oh, things ain't what they used to be
No, no
Radiation in the ground and in the sky
Animals and birds who live nearby are dying
Oh, mercy mercy me
Oh, things ain't what they used to be
What about this overcrowded land?
How much more abuse from man can you stand?
My sweet Lord
My sweet Lord
My sweet Lord

What American accent do you have?
Created by Xavier on Memegen.net

Midland. The Midland (please don't confuse with "Midwest") itself is the neutral zone between the North and South. But just because you have a Midland accent doesn't mean you're from there. Since it is considered a neutral, default, "non-regional" accent you could easily be from someplace without its own accent, like Florida, or a big city in the South like Dallas, Houston, or Atlanta.

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?
