I have had oh... I'd say a couple handful of products returned the past couple of weeks that are in the facial care category. And a few people even asking about it. Yesterday some Cetaphil was brought back. Why? Each one of the ladies bringing back their items mentioned "sodium lauryl sulfate" and how "it's bad to use" or "you shouldn't use it". Of course, they all had their reciepts, except for Cetaphil lady who got a Money Card (store credit) so I just go ahead and honor their refunds. But I was left scratching my head.

I'd had enough of them to wonder "what the heck am I missing"? I hadn't heard any real news pieces about it or anything and nothing has been recalled because of this ingredient. Is Oprah at work again leading her bleating sheep masses astray? I know what SLS is, and it's a common ingredient in cleaning and personal care products. For instance SLS is what makes your facial cleanser and shampoo foam up. It's a detergent, basically.

I just did some looking. AHA! There's the culprit. An email is it? Floating around telling people to OMG NOT USE ANYTHING ON YOUR BODY CONTAINING SLS OMG! It's according to the email carcinogenic. Um, people. Before you panic, and gather up your entire pantry full of shampoo and facial cleanser and take it back to the drugstore, do some questioning and fact checking.

The email gives lots of false info. SLS has NEVER been proven to be carcinogenic. It can be an irritant to some, but not cancer causing. Here's a page I found on SLS myths and facts. The American Cancer Society even debunks the "it causes cancer" myth. As I said, to some it can be an irritant, but you don't have to worry about catching "OMG TEH CANCER" from it.

The moral of this story, kids? Don't believe that something is hardcore fact just because its in print or comes to you from a friend or family member in email. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go shampoo my hair.

Probably doesn't cause cancer but it definitely increases and aggravates apthous ulcers in people with chronic stomatitis. Almost every major brand of toothpaste has it but there are a few 'natural' or 'sensitive' brands that do not. Some patients report a 100% recession of new sores when switching to a toothpaste with no SLS. I had a significant decrease but not a complete remission.

I love Toms of Maine toothpaste, but alas it contains SLS too.

Actually they have 4 that do not but they are harder to find in stock locally:

Rembrandt, Biotene and Sensodyne are 3 others that don't have it.

In a similar vein, I have yet to see any evidence that high-fructose corn syrup really is as evil as some people want to think it is.
