After the boys of summer have gone...

I was setting up a little beach / pool playlist on my iTunes and did one on Spotify as well. If you have Spotify set up, follow me! You can find a convenient little widget to click on there in the left hand sidebar on my journal.

In setting mine up, I was looking around at some others for inspiration and just to be nosy and see what other people have on their summer playlists. I saw "Boys of Summer" by Don Henley on so many of them. It's even on Billboards top 100 summer songs list. Not on mine. That is an AUTUMN song! It opens with "Nobody on the road, nobody on the beach..." and instills, to me anyway, the end of summer along the California coast when everyone's gone, and it's getting colder as the days go into Autumn. It's also more thoughtful and kind of melancholic in feel to me, looking back on what you've left behind. Summer flings that were had and come to and end as the summer days fade. I love the song, and the video. Just not on a SUMMER playlist.

My Spotify has gone kind of wonky—I think because I refuse to let it link itself to my Facebook or iTunes library. It keeps telling me I'm an unrecognized user when I try to link to you.

I agree so much about "Boys of Summer" -- it's a bit too sad and wistful to be a summer song. For nice bright summery songs I love 80s pop music. I mean it's a no-brainer but "Vacation" by the Go Go's is the one that instantly comes to mind. And like any songs from the first Karate Kid movie. lol Ha, I feel old. ;-)

For newer music, the entire album "Discover a Lovelier You" by the Pernice Brothers is summery to me in sound -- reminds me of a melancholy Beach Boys with at sort of California vibe and beautiful harmonies.
