Hellzapoppin' at the old farm house! And lots of MURDE. Let's just get right into it, shall we?

This episode picks up where the first one left off. Shelby's running through the woods. She comes up on Kathy Bates (her character is as yet unnamed) leading some kind of ceremony. There was a deserter among them, he ran away. So she sticks a pig's head on him and says "let him be purified!" (and oh, hi, Lady Gaga there in the crazy bunch!) then they've got him tied to a spit where they proceed to roast him alive. The group spots Shelby and goes after her.
"I am the queen of every hive. I am the fire on every hill. I am the shield over every head. I am the spear of battle. Who but I am both the tree and the lightning that strikes it?"

Lady Gaga and Kathy Bates. Note that Gaga has a tooth on her head!
Shelby runs, makes it to the road, finds Lee, who rescues her and takes her to the hospital. When Shelby tells the police about the sacrificial ceremony she witnessed. Matt comes to visit the next day and Shelby is now convinced that it's the local crazies still trying to scare them off. Matt FINALLY concedes to finding somewhere else to live, but Shelby refuses to give in to them. "If it's a fight they want", she says, "it's a fight they're going to get."
As if all bad juju in that place and all the stuff that's been happening isn't enough to convince her otherwise, Lee brings her daughter, Flora, into the mouth of hell to the house. She desperately wants to reconnect with her. But not soon after her dad, Mason, drops her off to spend time with her mother and she's settled in, the girl starts talking to an invisible presence, "Priscilla". Lee questions her daughter about her new "friend". Flora says Priscilla lives in the basement, and has promised her a bonnet just like hers if they help her "make it stop". When Lee asks what she means by that, Flora says "make the blood stop."
As they continue talking there's a crash in the other room. A vase of flowers has shattered on the floor, and there's a bonnet. Shelby later asks Lee what she was thinking bringing her daughter into this place with all that has been going on. Lee just needed to be with her daughter.
That night, Matt and Shelby hear pig noises. Shelby is so done with this, just wants it to stop and angrily gets up to go out and show them that "we won't be bullied!" . Matt follows. They go outside, and in the darkness, a giant pig-man comes running at Matt. Shelby, meanwhile, has found a fire pit where what looks like a pig (where are all these pigs coming from anyway?) is being roasted. Matt runs over and sees it too. They destroy the fire pit, knocking down the spit with the pig. The couple calls the police, who come out to the house to see the fire pit remnants for themselves. Shelby threatens them. If they don't work much harder than this to protect them, she's going public with everything. The police promise to hunt down the responsible party, and until they find them, the couple is promised round the clock police presence on the property.
They go back to bed, feeling that with the police around, they can breathe easy and sleep. At least for now. Not too long after, the phone rings. Matt answers to hear what sounds like an old woman on the other end wanting help. He looks down to see that the phone line has been cut.
He goes into the next room to find a hospital bed, wherein lies an old woman. She's attended by two nurses. The old woman is begging them not to give her any more medicine. They insist. When the old woman again refuses, one of the nurses takes out a gun, and shoots the old woman in the head. The other one, with a can of red spray paint, writes the letter 'M' on the wall. M... for Margaret, the old woman's name.
Lee is roused from sleep when she hears Matt outside telling the police to come in and see this horrible murder scene. They do, and find nothing. Lee's worried that it'll now be her brother and Shelby that will be known as the "kooks".
So Flora's dad comes to collect her. But where's Flora? Mason and Lee go search, and find her in a little cupboard like closet. She's not playing hide and seek, as the child normally loves to do. She's there talking to Priscilla. Flora is negotiating with Priscilla, offering her doll in trade. When asked by her parents why she's negotiating and offering to trade her doll, Flora says "so she wouldn't kill us, she's gonna kill us all and save me for last." Mason grabs his daughter, says he's calling the judge, and they GTFO as we see a heartbroken Lee call after them.
This causes Lee to go off the wagon. She can't abide the thought of never seeing her daughter again. Matt and Shelby find her drunk in the kitchen after having broken a bowl. But that isn't all. There are knives stuck in the ceiling. Matt assists his sister up to her room and gets her into bed, telling her she needs to get herself together and leaves the room, Lee sleeps. Suddenly those two crazy nurses appear at the foot of her bed.
Meanwhile, downstairs, Shelby calls Matt over to the window asking him if he can see the girl standing outside. He can. Hey, Priscilla, that you? They go running out there to discover a trap door that opens up to an underground room or tunnel. Upstairs, Lee wakes up to see the two crazy nurses who then disappear. She sits up to see impaled on the wall bloody, moving pig parts. Lee isn't sure if this is a nightmare or if she's so drunk she's hallucinating.
And but of course Matt and Shelby climb down into that underground cavern. It looks to them like someone had been living down there. There's a television and a camera. They take the tape back up to the house and play it. On the tape is Dr. Elias Cunningham (oh hi, Denis O'Hare!) who was documenting things that were happening to him in the house. He says it's October 11, 1997. He proceeds to tell the story of the two nurses who worked at an assisted living facility. I guess they were choosing people based on their names and the lack of care shown to them by their relatives. Apparently the ladies had killed these patients, each name beginning with the next letter of the word MURDER which they'd be spray painting on the wall. But by 1989, when the police came in to do an investigation, everyone and everything was gone. Except the unfinished word MURDE on the wall, still needing that final letter. It was covered up with wallpaper.

EDRUM!
Matt and Shelby go to the wall, and take down the wallpaper. Sure enough.... MURDE is revealed. They go back to the tape. Cunningham is sure that the nurses were victims themselves of the forces in the house, and hadn't fled. Cunningham documents his attempt to find the nurses on his tape. He finds a woman in the house, who attacks him. The video ends abruptly. There's a noise. They go to the front door, where they find a bloody meat cleaver is sticking.
Next day Matt confronts the bank. But he's informed that they agreed to the purchase of the house "as is" . Shelby then accuses them of purposely changing the address so that researching the story of the nurses would prove difficult. She says she's sure these neighbors would buy it back in an instant. Nope, sorry, the house is yours. Bank man leaves. As Matt and Shelby stand outside, Lee pulls up. She has Flora. Yep, she's committed a felony and essentially "kidnapped" her daughter. Matt informs her of this, she's aware.
Shelby takes Flora inside to do her homework. Matt and Lee talk some more and go in to see Shelby on the phone with Flora's dad, Mason. Shelby manages, thankfully, to talk him out of involving the police and seems to placate him. Flora is distracted while the others are talking, by a woman outside the window. Lee goes to where Flora was supposed to be doing her homework, to find the girl gone. And hey, we're back in the woods! And this woods, even in the daytime isn't anywhere I'd want to be for very long. Lee comes across something that makes her scream. It's a tree, stripped bare. At least a mile up, hangs Flora's yellow jacket.

* More and more reminding me of Season One's Murder House.
* I'm baffled by Shelby. Her motivations in staying etc. Just...
* The cops keep mentioning Polk and sons. When do we get to see them?
Coming up:
* Lee telling them to turn off the cameras in next week's promo .... something's gonna take this in another direction I'm feeling like. Particularly with her daughter being all Cole in "The Sixth Sense" talking to a dead girl. And then seeing her jacket up in the tree...
